Massachusetts Schools Ban Bake Sales: Healthy or Half-Baked?

In an attempt to curtail youth obesity, the Massachusetts school system has placed a ban on junk food that extends from a half-hour before school starts to a half-hour after it ends. That means on-campus bake sales are a no-go, and it has no shortage of critics. Some students and parents are hailing the ban as a vast overreach of government -- a "nanny state" measure that cannot be tolerated.

One blogger at PJ Media wrote, "It’s over. The whole American experiment. Over. Done." Lauren Smith, the medical director for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health explained, "We're at a place in Massachusetts where one-third of our kids in schools are either overweight or obese. [The goal is to] create an environment in schools where kids have an opportunity to make choices among healthy options." Do you think banning junk food (and consequentially, bake sales) is a good idea -- or is it half-baked?

Just another sign that the Government wants to control every aspect of your life. I'm waiting for the day that the Government takes you children at birth to make sure they are raised properly. It can't be far off when people actually think the Government should have anything at all to do with what your children are eating.

First licenses for lemonade stands, now bake sale bans. What next? - Car washes and lawn mowing jobs, babysitting and newspaper deliveries? Doesn't our Department of Health have better things to do? Obviously not!!!

Must the authorities dictate the people's habit and lifestyle? Why not then ban fast foods?

They wouldn't want to give up the taxes that they make off of the major players like Mcie Dees.

Besides, you might want to be careful...you don't give them more ideas.

This is what happens when people accept government intrusion on so many other aspects of life and when they expect schools to raise these children more than is right.

There's nothing wrong with junk food in moderation. I personally don't have an issue with the school district banning vending machines and the like, but a complete ban that includes things like bake-sales? Unnecessary and over-the-top.

It's a bunch of small minded people running the school. Why not use the energy on something productive.

Parents, and only parents, should control what kids should eat. Don't give them money for the bake sale, or tell them not to buy any sweets, that is the parents' prerogative, not the schools. Schools need money, and it is a very good way to raise it by having a bake sale.

Good point... the kids are only buying junk food because their parents gave them money to do so.

They have no right to make that kind of rules and should be fought in court, it is nobodies business to tell you how to raise and feed your kids whether you are right or wrong.

I don't know how clean your kitchen is, or how well you bake. You can sell me burned cookies, or you could have "accidentally" got a roach in your dough. Or rat poop, or E. coli. I don't know, I take that risk if I buy from a bake sale. At least food factories and restaurants (even fast food places) have oversight.

Companies that produce food sold in stores are overseen by the FDA. And if something does happen to go wrong, they have to announce recalls.

If you have roaches in your kitchen, you aren't required to tell anyone.

I'm pretty sure your reply wasn't meant for MY reply since it makes no sense, whatsoever.

Oh...and everything in my kitchen is FDA approved. If I make bacon, eggs and toast, it was FDA approved before it even hit my kitchen.

Btw-check the guidelines for the FDA...they actually let X amount of bugs and other contaminants in food...

Your response is "Don't buy anything."

I'll buy stuff at reputable places that are overseen. I won't buy stuff from people who haven't cleaned their kitchen in a year, and have roaches crawling around their kitchen.

You should have gotten together with Michael Jackson and Howard Hughes....both were phobic about germs. From what I can tell by your picture you look alive and healthy! Unless you have cooked exclusively in your kitchen all your life chances are you've ingested some things you wouldn't care to know about. How many ppl have croaked from a bake sale item?

I have eaten primarily fast food, or my wife has cooked for me. I don't cook myself. But those places have health inspections, and have some oversight

I can see that there are NOT cockroaches running around, or ants running in lines. I can't say that for other people's kitchens. And my room mate uses bleach, which takes care of probably 99% of the germs out there.

Usually I'm with the school boards and government on things like switching to whole grains in school and baked fries in cafeterias and getting rid of vending machines filled with chocolate bars... but leave baked sales alone! It's a great way to raise money. If your kid is getting deep fried caf food and chocolate bars every other day, then ya they're at higher risk to gain weight... It's not once in awhile treats that bake sales offer that make people obese, it's a lifestyle. I think schools should focus on making time for gym classes that aren't once a week, and maybe not getting rid of play equipment so kids can get the exercise they should be getting.

I don't think bake sales should be banned. Sure, take the vending machines out, serve healthy food for lunch, I'm all for that. If parents want to keep their children from eating junk food, don't give them the option of buying it every day at school. Those parents who don't care can send junk food in packed lunches.
Occasional bake sales are fine and teach children that any food can be ok in moderation.

Bake sales have been around for maore years than we really know. I attended a funeral yesterday oi a lafy just a few days short of beingg 100 years old,, I am pretty sure this woman provided many bake goods for her church and other bake sales and didn't hurt her or many like her.

Moochelle needs to stay out of the private lives of people and schools and let them handle things their on way, good or bad.

There are healthy baked goods and this might have been a nice opportunity to teach about that, but banning something does not teach about it because the focus becomes about the injustice of the ban itself.

I used to be obese, it was my OWN decisions that kept me obese. I gained weight due to medical malpractice or lack of information at that time with use of steroid drugs for a condition. Food will not cease to exist, it is our own attitudes about food that need to change, we don't need laws for that. Attitudes are changing with more information. I lost 100 lbs...anyone can be healthy.
