The yahoo article title is misleading, because when you watch the video of the news report, you can see that it didn't have to do with the dog. The husband suffered a medical issue, and the wife jumped in after him.

    Two reasons.

One, I can understand loving your dog and wanting to do anything you can to help it live.

Two, if they were so stupid that they could not save a dog from a lake without killing BOTH of them, then something was bound to take them out sooner or later. I am surprised they reached the age they did.

it must have been like a family member to them. Its a living being, what would you say if people question you if your life was worth risking for the one of those you dearly love ?

I see nothing wrong trying to save the life of something you love. They did what they thought they needed to do. RIP

They must have REALLY loved the dog, and if they did it willingly that is a very noble sacrifice. I would do the same for my pets!

Even if I wasn't sure of saving my pets, I would rather die having tried as live and always wonder if it would have been possible to rescue them

They didn't die trying to rescue the dog the dog was fine.

The husband had a medical issue while swimming with the dog, the wife who could not swim tried to help her husband, and that's how she also got into difficulty.

it is quite sad, but it wasn't because of the dag.

It wasn't worth their life, but love 'em for putting the life of another being over their own.

I can only answer this question from my OWN perspective and i would(and in actual fact HAVE) risk my life for my dog-without the slightest hesitation. So, YES, I personally believe that they did what their conscience prompted them to do and for THEM that was worth the risk they took, which sadly resulted in their own deaths...

I noticed the only one alive now is the dog.

I'm not one of the, "just and animal" types but people should be more cautious.

But sometimes you just react in a moment. He probably thought he could save his dog and didn't see a life threat.

Obviously in the situation you are not thinking about that. You instinctively jump in...from there who knows what happened to the guy. He was in "distress" doesn't tell you much and she couldn't swim when she jumped in. Crap situation, but if one of my dogs fell out of a boat I wouldn't think twice about jumping in. I'm not going to sit there and say "oh I can get another dog."

I'm pretty sure that the dog didn't have friends, family, and co-workers that interacted with him in any meaningful way. Not that dogs aren't great, but a dogs life is not worth a human life, let alone two.

For the family, losing a dog you can over. Losing people you love, not so easy.

Of course not. It was an animal, i don't care how much they loved it. Ppl treat their pets like they were human..they are NOT! The animal can be replaced with 100s of others but the daughter and sons and grankids cannot replace the humans they lost.

They voluntary risked their lives for their beloved pet, animals have feelings too some people saying how it's not worth saving another animal's life are the people I hope I won't ever have to save. To each his own though

Depends on the person, watching my animal drown or get hurt would be like watching my kids get hurt! The couple wasn't that old that swimming out to save the dog shouldn't have been a problems for the man,,,,,the woman yes as she didn't know how to swim and I think she went into save her husband. I'm older than that and I wouldn't hesitate to jump in to save anyone. Most dogs are good swimmers, so I think it's a matter of they were not thinking right, they reacted too fast. It's a shame no matter what the reason.

After reading gvc's comment I went back and looked at the video listed here. I didn't look at it as I seen it earlier on Yahoo, but this one is a later edition I guess as they weren't saving the dog, they were in shallow water and the wife jumped in to save her husband. I don't understand if it was shallow how she drowned. They were people there helping her with her husband. Didn't make sense. Don't know how this happened, my reply was under my comment.

It is odd that it happened in shallow water. --And the report said that the wife told the other people to help her husband first. So that would mean that she was alive when they got there. I am thinking that the reporters are messed up on what really happened.

There is no animal on the earth worth risking your life to save.
Apparently now they are thinking the wife was trying to save the husband who suffered from a heart attack instead of the dog.
I would jump in to save another human being, but never for an animal.

After what you said I went back and looked at the video, as I didn't hear what you said they said. I seen it on Yahoo also but a little earlier so I assumed the video was the same one, it's been changed. The first one said the dog fell in and the man jumped into get the dog, and had a problem (did not say heart) so the wife jumped in even though she couldn't swim. If the water was just wadding deep, I don't understand how the wife drowned. This second video said they weren't saving the dog.
