Martin Luther King was NOT a Republican. Have Republicans Been Telling A Lie ?

University of Cambridge historian David Garrow stated in a Salon profile of Alveda King regarding Martin Luther King: "King was not only not a Republican, he was well to the left of the Democratic Party of the 1960s [....] It’s also well-documented that Dr. King was a strong supporter of Planned Parenthood."Also, after the Republicans nominatedBarry Goldwater (who voted against the Civil Rights Act) and Strom Thurmond became a Republican, Dr. King actively campaigned against Goldwater.

Our state partners have spotted a popular Republican talking point: the claim that Martin Luther King Jr. was a member of the GOP.

We heard it in Texas, then Tennessee and nowRhode Island.

To check it out, we checked with King biographers, including Pulitzer Prize winner David Garrow, and found that King avoided partisan identification. "It's simply incorrect to call Dr. King a Republican," Garrow told PolitiFact Texas.

We rated the claim False.

In fact, in "The Autobiography of Martin Luther King, Jr.," which was published after King's death from his written material and records, King called the 1964 Republican national convention that nominated Goldwater a "frenzied wedding ... of the KKK and the radical right."

Republicans like to flatter themselves by picking and choosing prominent famous leaders in American history.
It may be interesting to note some of the most famous they embrace, albeit involuntary, like Charles Manson, Timmy McVeigh, Bernie Madoff and even Jerry Sandusky.

The first word was right, so I'll go for it. Martin Luther King was a Republican, and not in a way that was insignificant, though he very clearly changed his party loyalties in 1960; the very source you cite says so. Martin Luther King, Jr. apparently never registered as a Republican.

Go to the politifact link. Go to the righthand column, "Related Rulings". Click on the second entry, Charlotte Bergmann.

Unfortunately for her, Charlotte Bergmann got it wrong, she actually refers to Martin Luther King, Jr. And many of the other references one sees are often, to a greater degree than not, disingenuous. But they aren't lies, at least so long as they don't say "Jr.".

Right up there along with Palin thinking Reagan went to college here in CA. King was first and foremost an advocate for the rights of the people no matter the color of your skin. He wanted the US to be a united nation and the leader of the world to show them if we can so can you.

But as we are humans we have failed to follow that dream.

Dr. Martin Luther King was called a "communist" by some, which back then (like today) was associated with democratic policies such as social justice and integration. So if he was a Republican he would not be one by today's standards, for sure.

call it what you want, if the republicans are so ignorant, then why is it that ron paul actually represents the ideas of the original republic... meaning republic is a form of government with the vested power in the citizens of that state or government, maybe the republicans are claiming a false identity, as are the democrats. I do not know that MLK was or was not a REPUBLICAN or a DEMOCRAT, but MLK did not agree with tyranny and socialism, maybe you forgot this... You didn't provide the correct answer for this one.

When I first heard of MLK in the late 50's, he was reported to be a REGISTERED Republican. Most of the Black people I knew were, and that makes sense. The KKK was populated by vocal Democrats, so why would they have associated themselves with that group?

He didn't make any issue of political party or endorse anyone (that I remember). But after JRK came to his aid (a political coup for JFK), and LBJ continued to push for civil rights changes, it is easy to understand why he had stronger ties to the "new" Democrats.

That dumb myth republicans constantly say just will not die. Blacks in the south used to be republicans, but they were not the same republicans as today's republicans, because the white segregationist, white supremacist Nazis (a.k.a, Dixiecrats) were the democrats. Why would black people be a part of the same political party as Nazis? I take the longest-serving Democratic US senator Robert Byrd as a good example because he was a Dixiecrat.

if the republicans were stand up, everyone in the country would respect them. Unfortunately both parties have gotten off on the wrong path, as both terms democracy and republic have a concept behind them that represents government by the people. In which the people of that country or state have the vested power and authority over all social issues regarding their country. It is clear now that none of these "parties" represent the roots of their parties! This is why it is so important to vote against the status quo, vote RP2012, or Gary Johnson, but I would prefer to get them both in there, and start rollin some heads in Washington!
