Manny Ramirez Released from Jail: Did He Get Off Easy?

Former MLB star and controversy connoisseur Manny Ramirez was arrested Monday afternoon after his wife called the authorities claiming he slapped her so hard her face hit the bedpost.

This morning The Associated Press reported he's already been released from jail on $2,500 bail with the condition that he does not have any direct contact with his wife.

The 39-year-old has denied the charges against him, but his wife, Juliana, maintains he struck her during an argument in their bedroom and was afraid the confrontation would escalate, so she called the police.

Ramirez refused to speak to reporters outside of the Broward County Jail when he was released Tuesday.

This comes just months after his retirement from professional baseball, which immediately followed news that he had tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.

Manny's career has been alternately plagued and blessed, mostly thanks to an inconsistent combination of athletic ability and unabashed arrogance. He has often split public opinion right down the middle, particularly when he's doing well.

But he's not making it easy for fans to like him. Any remaining supporters will have a tough time reconciling this latest "character flaw."

A woman who was in the car with Ramirez as he left the jail, apparently his sister, told reporters, "He's my brother, we love him no matter what. He's an amazing guy and we love him no matter what."

It is standard prcedure all across America to let the person bond out and come back to court later. THAT is our system of justice.

ANY person on here who gets picked up on this charge would probably love the right to bond out within 24 hours and go home to either work it out or get a counselor (marriage) or get an apartment. Just the verbal charge of abuse does not mean you stay in jail forever until the trial. When my ex was picked up for this, he was back at the house in less then 12 hours-standard operating procedure.

$2,500 bail for smacking your wife around so hard that her head hits the bedpost? Wow. The punishment definitely doesn't fit the crime there.
"Manny's career has been alternately plagued and blessed, mostly thanks to an inconsistent combination of athletic ability and unabashed arrogance."
Oh so he's arrogant. BIG SHOCKER. I wonder how long he was in the pokey for. Probably not too long due to his status. You have money in this country- you'll certainly go places no matter what consequences you face for whatever horrendous crime you committed. This is a perfect example and it's puts a pathetic light on our justice system as a whole. You have money, you rule. How twisted........It's sure as hell time for some change in this country. Not the kind of change Obama can give you though, I can tell you that much.

Is this why he is out or could it be that is just not enough evidence against him?

Where is the undecided? As Tigger Too said, we do not have enough information to make this decision yet because the trial is still pending.

Actually, I agree with Tigger Too. There should be another option for this poll. The process has not even completed yet, so it is way too early for anybody to say "yes" or "no" for sure. But so far he is being treated like anybody else. He was charged based on his wife's statement to the police and whatever the police observed when they arrived. He was kept several days before allowing to be bailed out (which is typically for domestic violence arrests). He made bail and was ordered to have no contact with his wife. So far I don't see any hint of favoritism due to his status or wealth.

There should have been a choice for UNDECIDED or I DON'T KNOW. Manny Ramirez has not been tried and/or convicted for domestic violence. He was merely arrested and taken to jail after his wife called the cops and alleged that he'd knocked the snot out of her. Ramirez paid $2,500 for bail to get out of the hoosegow while the charges are pending, and that amount sounds about right for a misdemeanor battery charge. He'll likely cop a guilty plea or take an Alford plea, and he won't end up doing any jail time, but the judge might give the guy community service and/or probation for assaulting his wife. It always slays me how a condition of bail in cases like this one is that the perpetrator have no contact with his/her victim while the trial is pending. Then the next day, the spouse or significant other is crying to take their lover back. Restraining orders in cases like the Ramirez dust-up usually aren't worth the paper on which they're written.

Unfortunately, this is the way our country's court system handles domestic abuse in far too many cases.

The abuser is slapped on the hand and served restraining orders, which is almost as bad as doing nothing. When a restraining order is given the abuser has to break the order before law enforcement officers can and/or will do anything. As a result, they do little besides pissing the abuser off.

In many, many, cases the first time an abuser gets caught breaking an order is after they have harmed or murdered the person that it was supposed to protect.

Easy for now the hard part is going to be getting the family violence case off his record. He will probably have to take anger management classes and do community service. That kind of deal is never easy on the victim or the aggressor.

i think the bail is a little too cheap for assault.
but ya' know, he still has to show up for court, and all.

i wish there was an undecided option.

First - he hasn't "gotten off". He's only out on bail and nothing has gone to court or been decided by a Judge, yet...has it? Second - has anyone seen pictures of the alleged injuries? He may have hit her. But it did not escalate into anything more. She wasn't hospitalized. She didn't need to go to a doctor, even. I'm not saying that he "didn't" do anything...or that if it was minor, he doesn't deserve punishment. I'm just saying that this is still pending and he is not "off".

He went to Jail, and had to post $2500 bond because of a domestic dispute. That's not exactly getting off easy under the circumstances.

Usually a domestic disturbance ends with the couple demanding the police officer leave the premises, or with 1 of the parties spending a week at mom's house. Worst case scenario is they go to jail and have to post bond, without ending up on SodaHead, or the evening news for their troubles.

Celebrities usually get away with murder, but this is an example of a celebrity getting the fullest extent of the law under the circumstances.
  • Muskoka Met 2011/09/14 02:38:05
    Muskoka
That is not the fullest extent of the law at all. Assault usually comes with an arrest and jail time after a trial.
  • Simms Muskoka 2011/09/14 12:00:19

Once the person has been proven guilty of assault in a court of law, and not just the court of public opinion.

Also, a slap is usually a low level misdemeanor that would earn you a ticket/fine. If they are considering it "family violence" or "domestic abuse" then it can be elevated to the level in which you may actually serve jail time.
