Few people are fond of tax collectors, but one man decided violence was the "only" way left to expose what he considered the evils of America's tax system.
Andrew Joseph Stack, 53, on Thursday flew his private plane into the seven-story Echelon 1 building in Austin Texas. The complex houses civil and criminal divisions of the Internal Revenue Service. The suspected kamikaze run left him dead and at least two people injured. One person is listed as missing. Stack is also suspected of setting his house on fire before he left for the airport.
The Austin American-Statesman obtained a copy of a lengthy diatribe Stack allegedly penned prior to his final flight. The screed is dated 2/18/10 and is signed "Joe Stack (1956-2010)." In it, Stack offers a list of personal failures and bitter defeats, including a decision in the 1980s to use a controversial interpretation of the IRS code to get out of paying at least some taxes. The IRS considered it a tax dodge and it cost him.
Stack concludes with a chilling passage that says his violent death "is the only" way to spark change and he casts himself in the role of a "freedom" fighter:
I know I’m hardly the first one to decide I have had all I can stand. It has always been a myth that people have stopped dying for their freedom in this country, and it isn’t limited to the blacks, and poor immigrants. I know there have been countless before me and there are sure to be as many after. But I also know that by not adding my body to the count, I insure nothing will change. I choose to not keep looking over my shoulder at “big brother” while he strips my carcass, I choose not to ignore what is going on all around me, I choose not to pretend that business as usual won’t continue; I have just had enough.
...Sadly, though I spent my entire life trying to believe it wasn’t so, but violence not only is the answer, it is the only answer.

Larson Whipsnade February 18, 2010 22:45:31+15LOOK at all the HOPE the CHANGE gave this guy! Frustrated, desperate, overwhelmed by ever increasing taxes, while fearful for his own security, until he flips out and flies a plane into a building. I bet you anything that he was a normal fellow at one time, and probably didn't want to hurt anybody, but he became so overwhelmed, he lost his mind.
Make no mistake folks, there is more of this coming! You can only stress people out so much before they break.
