Man Pulls Co-Worker From a Vat of Acid: Could You Do It?

There are a few moments that people can truly call "life-defining," but for 51-year-old Rob Nuckols, an employee at a roofing company in Clifton, New Jersey, one of those moments happened at 8:40 a.m. on Monday. One of his co-workers, 44-year-old Martin Davis, fell 40-feet through the roof of a high alloy tubing production facility, into a vat filled with a solution of nitric acid. Davis was fully submerged in the solution, and unable to get himself out. Nuckols made the split decision to climb in and help him.

According to NorthJersey.com, initial reports said Nuckols jumped into the vat to save Davis, but later reports claim three other roofers (Rob Fulton, 24; Joe Dabowski, 45; William Walker, in his 20s) helped him. Lucky for everyone, the acid was somewhat diluted, but Davis' brother John said, "They have [Martin] on a breathing apparatus and he's in critical condition. His condition is not so good. But he's a young guy. He'll pull through." Nuckols is being treated for burns on his legs and abdomen, while the other three were taken to the hospital with "irritation on their hands and arms."

I'll probably be too scared to actually do anything.

The world needs more people like Rob Nuckols around. Cheers for him and the co-worker he had saved!

Sitting here thinking about it, I honestly would have to say "no" - that I wouldn't jump in. I would do something to help, but jump into a vat of acid knowingly?? -- in the moment if it were reality, I might react on impulse and do it, you can't know until you are in the moment.

Guess you never heard that he rose from the dead (hell) . . . he is the only one who went to hell and came out alive! no man can make it out of hell without Jesus going there first and because he had no sin the devil couldn't keep him there and Jesus took the keys of death hell and the grave so that we too through His righteousness can rise from hell into eternal life with Him. i'm sure you've heard it before . . . Hope you can open your heart to the truth of His love and purpose for dying and rising again. IT was for you! So you could be with Him for eternity! He loves you even if so called christians haven't loved you! I hope you can find those who will show the real Jesus!

So which part of "fairy tales" is it that you're having trouble with here? Believing made up nonsense about impossible events does not bring them any closer to reality. Reality is that stuff which, when you stop believing in it, does not go away. Unlike mythology, which was never there to begin with.

I think I'd reserve climbing into a vat of acid for my child, or a close relative. I've seen the victims of severe acid burns, and they are unbelievable. I've had a couple of coworkers I would stick my neck out for, but only a couple over my whole life. But as others have answered, I can only guess what I'd do, not having been in that sort of situation.

I am curious why it was left to the roofers to fish this poor guy out in the first place. I would think that any company with a Giant Vat of Acid would have an emergency routine for such an eventuality.

It's quite probable that all employees are considered part of the emergency routine. They apparently had breathing apparatis, etc. My husband is a nuclear plant operator, and although his primary job is an operator, he and his co-workers are trained every six weeks for fire control, etc.

I don't swim, I would have to come up with a safer option for myself. Should have been an option of "I would like to think I would or other" because until you are in that situation you just don't know. More likelihood to risk yourself for a relative or close friend.
These guys were heroic, hope if it happens again to one of them another has the courage to save them.

Hard to say.. I don't think that anyone can really answer this beyond what they'd like to believe about themselves.... THIS is something you just DO or not do.. I've been on BOTH sides of this issue.. I have risked my life to save others and have had people risk their lives to save me.. And I have the scars for each and every occasion to prove it..

Now that I have reached an age that I NEVER thought possible ( Most likely to die before 30 figures prominately in my high school yearbook ) i have found that my youthful confidence in my invincability does not play such an integral part of my behavior as once was the case..

But I would STILL like to believe that I would do all that is possible to save a person in trouble.. ESPECIALLY if it involved a loved one or a child.. In THAT case even if I KNEW that I wouldn't survive id would not hesitate... There are WORST ways to die then to do so while saving the life of a loved one or a child and FEW there are that are better..

There really needs to be the "Unknown" option here. A lot of people are going to choose "Yes" because we would all want to be person with the courage to go above and beyond to help another, but in reality, we really don't know what we might do in any given situation, even if we have done so in the past.
I would only hope that if a situation would ever arise that presented a chance for me to go above and beyond, i would have the courage to do so and the humility afterwards to let it go.
