Man Is Rebuilding and Reenacting the Voyage of the Titanic: Would You Go?

Clive Palmer, an Australian billionaire mining mogul, has announced that he wants to not only build an exact replica of the Titanic, but also wants to reenact the ship's ill-fated maiden journey. Er, without that whole sinking part. He's skipping that. And okay, it's not going to be an exact replica. It's going to be fitted with fancy technology to ensure a safe trip. Though we imagine passengers might still feel some anxiety on day four.

When asked if he thought the so-called Titanic II was sinkable -- a sly reference to the original's misnomer -- Palmer replied, "Of course it will sink if you put a hole in it ... It will be designed as a modern ship with all the technology to ensure that doesn't happen. But, of course, if you are superstitious like you are, you never know what could happen." Aside from "state-of-the-art engineering" and a diesel engine, the ship will be as close to the original as possible. Would you be nervous if you had a chance to be on-board a replica Titanic ship?

Unless you invited all 525 members of congress and actually sank it. Then they could get a taste of what they are doing to this country. Otherwise, its a waste of money... We all know what happens ad nauseum.

Do you know how many people in the past 30 years have said they were rebuilding the titanic. Yet where is it? They all say they will but never follow through.

I would go but I think for me it is more about how I would love to travel the way we did back then. My Grandmother made over 30 crossing of the Atlantic and she started when she was a little girl. I always loved to hear her tell of those trips.

hope it doesn't have the same costs though....I went to a Titanic display in Las Vegas some years ago and remember seeing a sign that said the cost for a first class cabin for the Titanic would be equivalent to something like $35,000.00 today...YIKES!!!!

Most people do not go 1st class. That is often priced like that now but only the few super rich can pay.

good back up plan. After seeing the movie, I couldn't help but wonder why the people just milled around. If I'd been on that ship and knew it was going down, I'd have looked around and been banging something together. The ship had plenty of floating items and wood. Need to help yourself, not stand around and wait for someone to do it for you. I guess I've read too many Dirk Pitt/Clive Cussler books in my life now! Always have a back up plan.

I might take that chance at that. Even a replica ship would have a different crew, and no doubt a wiser crew.

I would just hope that the designers remember to "cap off" the Cargo Hold Compartments. That's the major reason that the original Titanic sank in the first place. The Sea Water kept flowing over the tops of the damaged Cargo Holds into the ones that weren't damaged. No to mention that the Metal used in the construction of the Hull of the Ship was "sub-standard" Steel. Also, the term "Unsinkable Ship" is a Myth. Anything that floats can sink! I just hope that Clive Palmer just remembers to have enough Life Boats on board. That's was the first mistake that the White Star Lines made!

I saw a documentary on it last month though. And the guys pointed out a very good fact. Titanic's sister ship was built of the same steel and sailed the oceans for decades with no problems, so they aren't sure it was sub-standard steel that was the smoking gun. I'd say it was more the issue with the cargo holds then the steel.

Some of the Rivets that were use for the Plating of the Hull were "sub-standard." The rivets had inclusions of slag which is bad for the strength of rivets. That's why alot of the rivets "popped" when the Titanic struck the Iceberg. Also, had the forward Cargo Compartments been sealed instead of being left without roofs, some of the flooding to the other compartments would've been midgated. The Titanic was a lovely Ship for it's time. Thank You for Your Reply.

That being said, I wouldn't mind a trip on a Hindenburg replica if they could lose the Nazi bling and fix the "exploding into flames" bug.

Nervous, no. This is a great example of having more money than sense. His ego is bigger than his brain. Just because "you can" doesn't mean you should. There is so much he could do to help people in need with that money. From his looks he eats very well. Maybe he should share some of that with starving children.

I don't see why he would bother, the entire WORLD is reenacting that sinking. Our economy is Titanic, and she's going down by the bow as we watch.

If they had some other ships nearby at all times in case something does happen.

Titanic has become to mean "it's going to fail", so it'll be interesting to see how long this lasts.

I had a relative die on the Titanic, so it would be kind of interesting to retrace his steps (the first half, anyway).
