Man Finds $150,000 in His Backyard: Should He Have Kept It?

Digging up a fresh batch of basil that you grew in your own garden is a nice feeling. Carrots and potatoes? Even better.

But there's not a vegetable on earth worth $150,000.

That's exactly how much money Wayne Sabaj dug up -- in cash -- in his northern Illinois backyard.

Only, he didn't get to keep it. Or, rather, he chose not to risk it. Which is unfortunate, because the 49-year-old carpenter is currently unemployed and living with his father.

Sabaj told ABC7, "I went over, picked it up, took it to the picnic table, opened it up and said, 'Wow, it is a bunch of money.' Then came into the house, looked at my dad and said, 'Now we are really in trouble.' I could really use this money, [but] with my luck, it would be bank robbery and I'd get caught and say I'd robbed a bank."

He reportedly found the cash while digging up broccoli from his garden. It was contained in multiple duffel bags, in stacks of $20 bills, and actually came in just under $150,000.

Now Sabaj is waiting to find out if anyone can come up with a legitimate claim for the money. If no one does, the police will proceed to help him and his attorney see if they can legally claim the money.

McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren told ABC7, "He did the right thing. I would commend him for that."

Yeah, well, commendations aren't worth a duffel bag of cash.

Of course! It's his backyard he should keep it. What idiot would lose 150K in someone else's backyard? He should keep the money. I know I would.

The property belongs to his father, therefore, he should have kept the money. I doubt that he will ever see that money again even though no one will claim it. It will probably go to the "Policemen Fund for Charity." As the Sheriff said, "he did the right thing." father money doubt money claim policemen fund charity sheriff wink

he should at least get some sort of finders fee for it say at least 10% but as he said it could be flagged money from a bank robbery or something that could of gotten him in trouble if he spent it

Maybe he did the "right" thing but possession is 9/10ths of the law. Keeping it isn't exactly wrong.

If the owner of that money is not located - he - the carpenter (not Hussein Obama) should get it - but pay the income tax.

It could have been money from a robbery or someone that didn't trust the bank. Returning or reporting it is the best policy.

I can understand his hesitation just in case it is dirty money or counterfeit but I hope he gets it back. Money doesn't grow on trees. I guess it depends on how long the money has been there on whether I'd be tempted to quietly keep it or not. If it was there a long time and it's not counterfeit, chances are it's long forgotten about. It stinks that he has to go through an attorney to get the money if it's not claimed. It seems to me that the police department could handle it directly instead of letting a shark take a huge bite out of it.

It's to bad there wasn't an undecided, because that's where I'm really at. There are too many ways to look at how to answer this question, such as, what year is on the bills, how long has Waynes father lived in the house and owned the property, what condition were the duffel bags in, which would give you some idea of how long they may have been burried. Then you might think maybe from a robbery, or worse, gang or mob money, or counterfit. If I wanted to gamble, I might spend some but not a lot, the last thing you want to do is not be working and start spending cash people know you don't normally have. So, there you have it, yes & no or maybe......

I was thinking what if that was mob money or buried after some criminal act. They will be coming back later to get it and when it is not there who knows what would happen. I mean who else buries 150K in there back yard?

He absolutely did the right thing. I hope we as a people haven't decided that honesty is no longer the best policy. I wouldn't be surprised though since everyone seems to think they have an entitlement to everything they want or need. Give me free healthcare, give me free insurance, pay for my food, pay for my housing, give me cash so I can spend it to boost the economy, and on it goes. What ever happened to WORK AN HONEST DAY, GET PAID AM HONEST WAGE? No thanks to Obama, we now have a society of people with their hands out with that "gimme" attitude. Besides, the guy might have been right and the money could be traced from a bank heist. Then he ends up with the blame. Nope, when you find large sums of money, and you keep it, somebody is going to be looking for you. If it turned out to be a cartel or a gangster thing, they might not treat you very nice once they do track you down. I hope it turns out to be untraced money that nobody is looking for. Then the guy gets an honest payday, after his lawyer sucks out his 40% first.
