A 4.4 magnitude earthquake shook southern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, causing little damage but worrying residents of a disaster following in the footsteps of Haiti and Chile.

The earthquake was centered near Pico Rivera, about 11 miles from the Los Angeles Civic Center. The LA County Fire Department say they have not received any reports of extensive damage. A 4.4 magnitude earthquake is described as a quake that could break windows and knock "books off the shelf," at the most.

John Bellini of the U.S. Geological Survey says there is "always a chance" that a small tremor could be foreboding of a much larger quake, but that residents should not worry.

Do you think California will be the next to get hit in the string of disastrous earthquakes, or is the media making a lot of news out of nothing?

even if we had a massive earthquake like Haiti, we do not really risk the same destruction that occurred in Haiti. the fact is simple. our infrastructure is much more sound and our ability to have immediate aid and response would make it easier as well. in that sense i think it is all media hype that needs to be cooled down.

It's always a good idea to be prepared just in case. After all there are millions of people that live there.

Not having any plan in case of an emergency is just stupid.

Of course, I think it's always good to be prepared and I'm sure Californians know what to do in the event of a big earthquake. I do like what John Cusack said in the movie 2012, "When the government tells you not to worry, that's when you start to worry."

Even before I heard or saw the movie "2012," I did believe that the earth is undergoing some major changes related to our positioning in the galaxy and with all the major earthquakes over the last five years I am not planning to visit California any time soon. Indonesia, China, and Chile are all on the pacific plate as well as California so yeah, I'd be real worried to be in that state, but then I'm more prepared for tornadoes than earthquakes being from Kentucky. Kentucky did have an earthquake a couple of years ago which I slept right through. My daughter did wake up and think it was a tornado but she went right back to sleep which, at the time, I didn't find amusing. LOL

...Was nothing. Californians just shrug and finish ordering their Starbucks. If Haiti didn't make their houses out of cardboard, and Chile out of Mud Bricks, they would react the same way, and most people still would not know where either one was.

I will be the one dancing in the street, on the morning of Dec 22, 2012, laughing at all the doomsayers. Sorry, but the End of the World will not be for 11 Billion Years, when the Solar System is finally sucked into the black hole at the center of the galaxy.

Is that the center of the galaxy that our sun is supposed to be at on Dec. 21, 2012?
  • Thomas Nonickn... 2010/03/19 16:45:50

Actually, 12/21/2012 marks the 4200 year orbit of the Sun around the Galactic Core, or One Galactic Year. No, the world will not end on this date, as it hasn't in any other Galactic Year. The Mayan Calander Inner Ring simply marks the passage of this time. So... On 12/21/2012, you may wish all your friends a Happy Galactic New Year.

Oh, I don't think its going to end, I think there may be some celestial influences which may shake things up a bit. Earth will go on until our sun runs out of juice in a few more billion years. LOL

I think we should have a 5% federal sales tax for a natural disaster fund and a 5% federal sales tax for health care to include benefits for undocumented aliens. I will mention it to President Obama next time I email him.

I will if I can get triple "A" rating for 10 million dollars for something worthless. Then I can get a low interest loan for 8.2 million dollars and give myself a bonus worth 8 million dollars. Then when it comes time to pay back the 8.2 million, I can call my AIG insurance company and claim 10 million dollars of damage to my worthless asset.
AIG will pay me off and because I have been so smart, I will give myself another 10 million dollar bonus. But because I am too big to fail, I can get bailed out by all you hard working tax payers while I go to Mexico for the winter to find a safe investment for my 18 million dollars. Suckers.

You are so right when someone so blithely makes a comment that seems gleeful that millions could be seriously injured or killed, including families with children.
By the way, who does he think will pay to send aid and then to rebuild California? What you said was apropos.

Hollywood is making money (16 Billion last year) and not asking for bailouts. Yeah, lets get rid of them. I wonder who insuring them? If its AIG then another round of bonuses for a job well done.

You know California apparently isn't much of a liberal state since we still don't have gay marriage legalized for the most mundane reason.

Obviously this is God's punishment for being bigoted.

Also Hollywood is the ONLY part of the economy that has proven to be virtually recession proof. Tear that down and the entire country goes with it I'm afraid.

  • Loctia ObumbaI... 2010/03/18 15:47:48

Full of liberals =/= a liberal state. Our governor (thanks for mentioning it) at least seems to follow conservative practices and many of our laws aren't all that liberal, at least by your definition of the word.

I think you just find it easier to condemn it if it can be liberal. If it's conservative then you have quite a dilemma don't you? And I'm not saying it's conservative. I'm just saying it's not as black and white as you may think.

From northern CalEEfornia to southern CalEEfornia, its a land of LIBBYS. OJ would never have been let go in any other state except LIBBY CALEE.

You have made rude, ignorant comments not only about me, but also my child. I would love to know the thought process of this. As I would like to go back to college for Psychology. a little personal research doesn't hurt. Especially considering you call yourself a righteous man.
