Palin Aide: Crosshairs On Target List Not Actually Gun Sights

Brian Beutler | January 9, 2011, 10:52AM

list gun sights brian beutler january 9 2011 1052am

Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin

An aide to Sarah Palin claims the crosshairs depicted in her now-infamous target list of Democrats were not actually gun-sights, and that it's "obscene" and "appalling" to blame Palin for the shooting.
"We never ever, ever intended it to be gun sights. It was simply cross-hairs like you'd see on maps," said Rebecca Mansour on the Tammy Bruce radio show. Moreover, there was "nothing irresponsible" about the image, and to draw a line connecting Palin and Saturday's shooting is "obscene" and "appalling."
[TPM SLIDESHOW: Across the Nation, Vigils Held for Rep. Gabrielle Giffords]
You can see the original image below. Mansour called the crosshairs "surveyor marks." Palin has removed the list from her PAC website, but not from her Facebook page.
"I don't understand how anybody could be held responsible for somebody who is completely mentally unstable like this. Where I come from the person that is actually shooting is the one that's culpable," Mansour said, before intimating that the suspect, Jared Loughner, is actually a liberal. "It seems that he people that knew him said that he was left-wing and very liberal -- but that is not to say that I am blaming the left."
[TPM SLIDESHOW: Dem Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Shot In Arizona]
"I never went out and blamed Al Gore or any environmentalist for the crazy insane person who went to shoot up the Discovery Channel," she said.

So I mean, if we want to discuss facts, let's do more than quote a girl who "barely knew him" and hasn't seen him in 5 years shall we? Also, I think we'd all do better to just agree for now that this man was CRAZY, and not attempt to pin him on any political movement until more facts come out. This is a sad day in America.

I don't see one crosshair. Palin wouldn't be taking heat if she had said we need to target 20 candidates for November 2, and even put a map out about them, but she put rifle sights on them which has a completely different focus on them.

Targets or cross hairs, what's the significant difference? You are an intelligent individual. Do you honestly believe such a front-page politician would publicly imply for a second that political foes should be targeted for assassination or violence of any kind?

    ὤTṻnde΄ӂ
There's a BIG difference. If Palin didn't feel some guilt, why the hell did she take the map with cross hairs off her Facebook page and scrub some equally offensive Tweets?
I think Palin is irresponsible. She doesn't think. There was nothing in her psyche to give her the slightest clue that she shouldn't be using gun metaphors against another political party. It didn't even enter her mind that what she says a lot of fools listen to her and some of those fools are psychopathic.
We don't need Angle saying if she doesn't get her way, Americans should consider second amendment remedies and Bachmann telling her state that she wants them "locked and loaded." They need to STFU.

“We talk to these folks… so I know whose ass to kick.“

Unfortunately they were gun sights. There was a list of names, that looked like a hitlist and in conjunction with comments like "Don't retreat reload" it was almost a foregone conclusion that this would happen. I knew as soon as I saw this map for the first time that something like this would happen. If I could see it coming I am sure that anyone who is honest and realistic could see it coming too. If they couldn't they have a severe misunderstanding of human nature and the importance that some will put on their utterings and actions.

Why is it virtually ALWAYS the right wingers that go nuts and start shooting?

As it turns out, there are scientific studies that explain the irrationality, fear, anger and potential for violence from conservatives. Seems it has to do with the the reptilian brain and the size of the amygdala (the source of fear and anger) versus the size of the frontal lobe (source of higher thought, reasoning, and judgement).

Studies have shown that those who self identify as conservative, have larger amygdalas and smaller frontal lobes than those who do not self identify as conservative. That explains why conservatives are afraid of their own shadow and have difficulty with rational though and judgement.

Add constant, vitriolic, hate speech from Fox News pundits like Palin, Beck, etc., to the equation and these types of acts are to be expected. Anyone who is surprised that these things are happening should not be. Angered, disgusted, saddened, yes. Surprised, no.

Palin has proudly associated herself with guns. she has done so publicly ever since she stepped into the limelight and, likely, for long before that. she put cross-hairs which, as everyone who is not in denial knows, are associated with gun-sights on her infamous map and Giffords' name below it. she stated, on the same map, "Two down. Eighteen to go."

and now she is back-pedaling like crazy and blaming anyone she can place in her sights.

this is a lot of things - but it's not news.

Public people have got a duty to what they put out. Sad day for American politics. But most importantly people need to address issues raised. Innocent people died and people should do what they can so it dosen't happen again, even if it means asking some difficult questions.

Like WHY the college could NOT notify authorities that they had a student SO disturbed that they banned him from classes "until he could prove he was not a threat to himself of others" or WHY the idiot bag sheriff did not lable him as a "threat" which he already said in an interview he felt like he was after many encounters with law enforcement. And WHY there was no ability to information share amongst the school, students, and sheriffs office that may have caught this nutjob BEFORE he started shooting?

Let's ask the judges and lawyers who decided it was a privacy violation to share info on peoples mental health.

I understand that there are confidential reasons for not sharing someones mental health, but that it is a different matter if that person is judged a danger to there self or others. Sounds like a lot of things went wrong. Hope people address difficult issues to make things better.
