After Ted Kennedy died, she was nominated by the Democrats to run for the vacant Senate seat in a special election. In Massachusetts, a Democrat wins that seat just by converting oxygen to carbon dioxide. But not this time.
There was a hockey game being played at Fenway park (this was the middle of winter). Scott Brown was the Republican nominee. He showed up at Fenway to meet people, shake hands, and get some publicity.
When Coakley was asked why she wasn't actively campaigning, her answer sealed her fate: “As opposed to standing outside Fenway Park? In the cold? Shaking hands?” she fires back, in an apparent reference to a Brown online video of him doing just that.
In 10 seconds, she managed to insult Red Sox and Bruins fans. In another interview, she claimed that former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was a Yankees fan. Boston sports media piled on, turning Coakley into a laughingstock.
Just to make sure nobody forgot about Coakley's disparaging remark about Fenway Park, Scott Brown made a campaign video from the his appearance there.

How is any of this related to Obama? When the Democrats lost their super-majority in the Senate they went from 60 seats to 59. This was a special election -- the only Senate seat in the entire country that was up for grabs at the time. Obama was fully aware of Coakley's train wreck campaign and could do nothing about it.
So Obama shows up in Boston and makes a sports gaffe. It must have been Biden's day off.
