SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — Two attorneys for the Florida neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin said Tuesday that they have withdrawn as his counsel because they haven't heard from him in days and he is taking actions related to the case without consulting them.

Attorneys Craig Sonner and Hal Uhrig said at a news conference they haven't heard from George Zimmerman since Sunday. They said that against their advice, Zimmerman contacted the special prosecutor who will decide if he should face charges. A spokeswoman for Angela Corey's office didn't immediately respond to an email and two phone calls.

Zimmerman says he shot Martin in self-defense after following the teenager in a Sanford, a gated community outside Orlando on Feb. 26. He said after he followed Martin for a time, he was returning to his truck when the teen attacked him. He shot the unarmed teen to death during the altercation.

Sonner said they legal team had talked to Zimmerman almost every day the last couple months.

"As of the last couple days he has not returned phone calls, text messages or emails," Sonner said. "He's gone on his own. I'm not sure what he's doing or who he's talking to. I cannot go forward speaking to the public about George Zimmerman and this case as representing him because I've lost contact with him."

Uhrig said his legal team is still concerned about Zimmerman, who he said is "not doing well emotionally" and may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The lack of an arrest has led to protests across the nation and spurred a debate about race and the laws of self-defense. Zimmerman's father is white and his mother is Hispanic.

Sonner, the first attorney Zimmerman contacted, said he agreed to take the case on a pro bono basis until Zimmerman is perhaps charged.

Sonner said he has never talked to Zimmerman face-to-face and that the 28-year-old man has gone into hiding but that he believes he's still in the U.S. Both attorneys said they'd be willing to represent him again if he asks.

Ben Crump, an attorney for Martin's family, said they're concerned that Zimmerman could be a flight risk if he is charged with a crime since his now-former attorneys don't know how to contact him.

"At this point, we're just concerned that nobody knows where he is at. Nobody knows how to get to him," Crump said.

Zimmerman set up a website -- therealgeorgezimmerman.com -- to collect money from his supporters, but the attorneys said they didn't know about it until they started getting questions from the media.

"I am the real George Zimmerman," the website said. "As a result of the incident and subsequent media coverage, I have been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately, my entire life."

That portrait of his life since the shooting was confirmed by his attorneys.

Sonner said that he stands behind his statements that Zimmerman did act in self-defense, however, "I just can't proceed to represent a client who doesn't stay in contact with me."

Self-defense is an afirmative defense. He not only has to prove that his life was in danger, but also that he didn't initiate the fight. I think this is a tough case to make, given the phone call. He won't get murder, but he should. More likely it will be involuntary manslaughter, which is pretty irnoic when you think about it.
You don't "declare" someone "self defense" The cops wanted to charge him at the time. No charge has been filed, so there is no double-jeopardy clause to save him; and fortunately, there is no statute of limitations on murder. That isn't something I know, that the cops and prosecutor don't know, but apparently, it is what I know that YOU don't.

You're missing the point. This isn't about Zimmerman, or racism, or anything else. From a LEGAL standpoint: a typical defense is "not guilty". In this case, the burden of proof is on the prosecution. If that were the case, the prosecution has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, that (in this case) George Zimmerman, shot and killed Trayvon Martin. But an "affirmative" defense is different. In an affirmative defense, the accused admits to having done what he is accused of doing, but is claiming extenuating circumstances, which would excuse his action as "non-criminal". The most common affirmative defenses are insanity and (as in this case) self-defense. In an affirmative defense, the burden of proof shifts from the prosecution, back to the defense. In other words, the prosecutor doesn't have to prove that Zimmerman is guilty, in order to get a conviction. Due to his use of an affirmative defense, Zimmerman (and his defense lawyers) have to prove that his life was in danger, and that a reasonable person in that situation could reasonably have decided that they had no choice but to shoot Trayvon. And in this case, I think that would be a pretty hard case to make.

Well said. But I disagree that it will be difficult to affirm his defense.

    > He has wounds inflicted by Martin on his neck and head.
    > Zimmerman was retreating (an argument he can assert because he fell backward).
    > Vigilante's don't call 911 and advertise their intent.

Stand your ground laws allow people to address threats without having to retreat, even though it can be argued Zimmerman was retreating. His attorneys have to prove Martin attacked, that's all. Once they do that, his self- defense argument is quite clear.

Zimmerman told the 911 opperator that he was following Martin. "Stand your ground", does not mean pick a fight. Zimmerman has to prove that Martin attacked him, and that it wasn't the other way around. You can't start the fight, then shoot someone, because you're losing, and call it self-defense. If you're retreating (running away) you're more likely gonna fall forward. Wounds to the back of the neck and head, often result from being pushed down, which would suggest that perhaps he started the altercation, and found himself on the losing end.
I'm not saying he couldn't win. I'm just saying it's not going to be an easy case. And even though it's wrong, either outcome is likely to result in anger, and possibly rioting, which makes it that much more difficult.

I agree about both the case and the rioting. NBP has already tried to start one over this incident.

I heard the full tape, and it sounds like Zimmerman was out of breath then. I can't believe an overweight middle age man walked up, started a fight, lost the fight and then shot him in cold blood.

I don't disagree Zimmerman should have acted more prudently, but it doesn't pass the smell test that he started the fight.

Didn't Martin's girlfriend say something about Martin noticed a guy following him and he was going to confront him? I thought I heard that, I could be wrong.

NBC has admitted to "doctoring" the 911 call to say that Zimmerman volunteered that Martin was black. HE DID NOT! The 911 operator ASKED if he was black, white etc and Zimmerman answered!

NBC has apologized for their deliberate and ugly falsehood, but refuses to reveal who purposely created it! Ask NBC, why or why not?

You are being scammed to promote racism. Stop and ask yourself, why?
Did anyone wonder who paid for all those fancy, very professional, manufactured signs that magically appeared instantaneously, for the protest marches of 'has beens' Jackson and Sharpton?? Who paid for them?

Ask yourself who benefits from racial discord.......certainly not the people of Sanford, FL!
