Loch Ness Monster used to debunk evolution in state-funded Christian school. Should religious schools be funded by taxpayers?

It sounds like a hoax, but it's apparently true: The Loch Ness Monster is on the science class syllabus for kids at Eternity Christian Academy in Westlake, Louisiana.

As reported by the Herald Scotland, a Louisiana school that will receive tax-payer dollars, will teach kids that the mythological sea creature is real in order to debunk the theory of evolution.

According to the Herald, one textbook, Biology 1099, reads, "Are dinosaurs alive today? Scientists are becoming more convinced of their existence. Have you heard of the 'Loch Ness Monster' in Scotland? 'Nessie' for short has been recorded on sonar from a small submarine, described by eyewitnesses, and photographed by others. Nessie appears to be a plesiosaur."

Starting in the fall, thousands of schoolchildren will receive publicly funded vouchers to attend private schools, some of which are religious. Religious schools in Louisiana will receive public funding as part of a push from Louisiana's governor, Bobby Jindal, to move millions of tax dollars to cover tuition for private schools, including small bible-based church schools. Money will fund schools that have "bible-based math books" and biology texts that refute evolution.

At Eternity Christian Academy, pastor-turned-principal Marie Carrier says that evolution is not taught. Carrier said, "We try to stay away from all those things that might confuse our children."

She hopes to secure enrollment of 135 voucher students for the 2012-2013 school year. According to the website Salon, the school currently has just 38 students.

Any school should be funded as long as it abides by a minimum curriculum requirement, which would include evolution and the like. They are there to educate, not indoctrinate.

I don't want my tax money going to schools that don't teach critical thinking or real science. I don't see why I have to put up money to pay for a school just because it caters to a religion.

Religion is man's choice. Man made nonsense that wants to push it's own agenda as if it were superior and it is neither correct, nor superior.

The want to screw up their lives and their children lives, let them own it and pay for it but not a goddamn dime from Federal or State taxes.

There is no such thing as the Loch Ness Monster. It's pure publicity for that little area in Scotland. Their economy is built on the myth and whiskey sales. Nothing to do with religion.

I'm with you on that! I only take the hard line to feed my own awkward sense of humor. I believe that something caused life on this planet, and all the systems available to maintain it. However, I doubt science or religion has come anywhere near to describing what that something is.

I agree. My sense of humor can be outrageous and I realize no one else gets it. So I try to have a little self-censorship. Sometimes people take it the wrong way. And I never know until it happens. Then I am sorry but most times it is so innocent in my mind.

The thing I ought to have learned by now (but still haven't) is that the person reading my reply/response can't see my facial gestures or hear voice inflection. So my Sarcasm can create a SarChasm. I've had many a argument started over a smart a$$ed remark. Many of the people who have seen my comment over time though rarely ever take me serious. Some people just can't stomach me at all. But then they block me and we both get on with our lives.

Keep on trucking. And writing. You are right that the real difference is that in true communication you really have to see the facial expressions. especially if its someone you don't know well. Before the internet more friendships were affected by someone misreading a letter or even a phone call.

Thank you, I appreciate that. Funny you should say that. When I was a teenager I had a girlfriend who lived in Florida, and I was in NY. So, one of the ways we communicated was through letter. I always would try to make her laugh. But every now and again, she wouldn't get it and call me enraged cursing me every name she could think of.
