They’re already on menus, bathrooms, elevators and gas pumps and web videos, so is there anywhere to escape the ceaseless barrage of advertising?
Thanks to satellite radio, the car has been a lone refuge from the assault – assuming you can take your eyes off those giant digital billboards – but if California legislators have their way that could soon end.
According to an Associated Press report, state lawmakers are considering a bill that would allow the state to look into the manufacturing of electronic license plates for cars that would look like normal plates, but then switch to a programmed digital message when the vehicle is stopped for more than four seconds in traffic or at a red light.
The plates could also be used to broadcast Amber Alerts or traffic information in an emergency. If the technology pans out, California could be the first state to sign on, which may help generate some of the desperately needed dollars to fill the state’s gaping $19 billion deficit.

+Who selects what ads go on the plates?
+It could make drivers pay less attention.
+If they're electronic and flash from your plate ID, to something else....Someone with a little bit of talent could easily change the plate to anything they wanted it to be.
Things like the amber alert would be an excellent idea though.
If anything, the ads should be limited to public service announcements like we have now.
"Land of Lincoln", Sunshine State", etc.
Pennsy was sued over this plate .... they lost and the plate was changed
Not dense .. wouldn't have known about it if you didn't live here at the time it occurred.
Oh and thanks for explaining... :D
I am sure this will help the already distracted driver concentrate on the road... yeah right!
Oh! and who decides who gets the ad spot? the government? Yeah that won't lead to improper ad usage....
Honesly, legalizing and taxing pot is a much better idea... :-/
An example of how easy it is for special interest groups to campaign to make a change without having to be an elected official. Also proof that the people as one mass are inherently not the best source for decision making (too many voices for a logical debate) However the same can be said for the current California administration.
However, something has to be done to save the bankrupt states. Obama asked congressfor funding to save the services like hospitals, police, and schools in the bankrupt states. Don't know if they passed it or not.
