SEATTLE (AP) — Washington already has the nation’s highest state minimum wage at $9.19 an hour. Now, there’s a push in Seattle, at least, to make it $15.

That would mean fast food workers, retail clerks, baristas and other minimum wage workers would get what protesters demanded when they shut down a handful of city restaurants in May and others called for when they demonstrated nationwide in July.

So far, the City Council and mayoral candidates have said they’d consider it in the famously liberal city. One said, however, that it may not be soon.

Venture capitalist Nick Hanauer said there’s no time to waste. What the nation needs is money in the hands of regular consumers. “A higher minimum wage is a very simple and elegant solution to the death spiral of falling demand that is the signature feature of our economy,” he said.

Some businesses advocates say a higher minimum wage will make it harder for companies in Seattle to survive. They cite Wal-Mart, which has all but refused to accept a Washington, D.C., decision to raise the minimum wage to $12.50 an hour in big box stores.

A higher minimum wage eliminates low wage jobs because that’s how small businesses cut costs and that ends up hurting the people it was supposed to benefit, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Let's take a lesson from liberal government and take a look at Detroit and California. Liberal government drives cities into the ground. They can't get their socialist heads around the fact that spreading the wealth only results in making everyone poor.

It feels so good to help the poor. But lets make sure we get someone else to pay for it.

When the wealth of the six heirs of the Wallmart family surpasses that of the bottom 40% of the American people (49 million families), I think that it's not unrealistic to start paying workers an adequate wage.

If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation the last 45 years it would be $10.52 now. If it had kept up with productivity gains it would be $21.72!

I agree that the minimum wage should be raised but, $15/hr is too high. I'd like to see all States raise their minimum wage to what Washington State has set.

What could be done is set higher minimum wages on industries that have consistently higher profits and have not distributed those profits to those who deserve it the most. Big Box Retailers especially.

What could be done with the Big Boys is pass an Undistributed Profits Tax! To avoid the Tax, a certain percentage of the Profits must distributed as year end bonuses to lower salaried and hourly employees. Including those who only worked part of the year! Those can have their bonuses adjusted for the time they worked for the company. That will remove the malevolent incentive to fire employees to avoid paying the year end bonus.

But can the consumer public afford the trickle-down costs associated with the requisite costs of goods and services brought in by the higher wages? And, given higher costs of goods and services, those same minimum wage earners will STILL be behind the 8-ball in 1-2 years.

Businesses exist to make profit, not to be a parent to people who either can not, or will not, take the steps required to improve their own income. Artificially inflating the minimum wage to $15/hour will only drive business out of the city and force costs to rise relative to the new minimum.
If the city really wants to help the poorer people, they should consider giving more tax breaks to businesses (encouraging more businesses to locate there), lower personal taxes (letting people keep more of what they earned and encourage more private spending), and stop socialist spending programs which only encourage people to gorge at the public trough!

Change welfare to a supplement. Produce a pay stub and you will get a voucher good for food, housing, clothing or medical to get to a decent level. No pay stub=no assistance. No help for sitting on your butt doing nothing.
There should also be adjustments to the minimum wage. Working people should never be behind those who don't work.

The cost of running a business has declined drastically and the savings has yet to be forwarded to the worker. All this will do is allow a live-able wage!! Mechanics (technology) have overtaken the need for humans. And can do, costing less for businesses. Only the higher- Mucky-mucks reap the financial benefits, where the employees see smaller paychecks and the inability to "bring home the bacon"!! If you want the economy to MOVE---give folks something that they can strive for, so they can aim for the 'American Dream'- ALSO!!!

Wow you have no clue, and you're talking to a guy who has been the GM or Production Manager of several companies.
If a company in an industry replaces some workers with technology, so does his competition and the prices of the end product drop to reflect that and the consumer pays less. I remember my parents first VCR, it was $800.......

And if you want to "bring home the bacon" then put forth some effort to advance yourself. Minimum wage jobs are entry level unskilled labor, they are not meant to be jobs that you raise a family on, if you're stuck raising a family working at McDonalds then I guess you screwed around or partied too much and you deserve it.

So the price of everything we consumers buy should go up so a bunch of people who didn't put forth any effort to better themselves so they could make a decent living can get more money for being a lazy slug or from partying instead of worrying about their future??

No wonder you are an hourly worker. You have no idea what business is all about.

I was going to try to explain the hard work, long hours, sacrifices & risks those "higher- Mucky-mucks" took to open a business that employs people, but clearly your Democrat Socialist Party has brain-washed you beyond reparation.

The Socialist Dems have produced an entire generation of ninnyhammers & products of the "ME" generation.

Of the sane younger Americans, those who are driven to be successful & are would-be entrepeneurs with aspirations of owning their own business, most are being thwarted by the realization of escalating start-up costs & continual escalating monthly expenses.

Do you have any idea how much it costs to open a business?

Do you have any idea how much it costs monthly to run a business?

In your case, "Ignorance Is Bliss" fits.

Chrissi is part of what is wrong with our country. Just like Obama & the rest of the Economically Challenged Socialist Liberals, they have no concept of what it takes to run a business.

Chrissi said, "The cost of running a business has declined drastically". Obviously, this "hourly worker" has never owned or run a business & sure as hell doesn't run one now. I do. The cost of running a business has gone UP, not DOWN.

    Chrissi -

Keep voting Socialist "spread the wealth" Democrat and you won't have to worry about a job. You will be just as UNEMPLOYED as the Republicans.

BTW - not one new business has opened in my area in 3 years. That is exactly what happens when the Democraps are in control.

I have never seen our economy in such bad shape, even under Carter.

At least the parents & grandparents of the current Dems recognized Carter's failed 1 term & crossed party lines to save our country. Too bad the arrogant, ignorant, brain-washed "ME generation" weren't as intelligent. We could have had a businessman leading our country out of this devastating recession by now, a man who actually understands Economics. But NO! Being a Democrat, I am sure you are in favor of the Immigration Reform bill, too. Wait until you find out what THAT will do to American jobs!

The bill will add 33+ Million Illegal Aliens to American citizenship within the next 10 years.

While we are currently supporting the majority of Illegals on American welfare systems & have been educating their children in our school systems for free, even giving them free foreign citizen college grants (not to be repaid), their children are & will be as qualified for any American job as any current American citizen.

Instead of sending American jobs overseas, we are bringing "overseas/foreigners" to America, supporting them & paying for their education so they can "F" American Citizens out of American jobs right here on American soil. It's an "IN YOUR FACE" anti-American bill, but one I am sure you support because of Democrat propaganda. REAL AMERICANS oppose it. THEY understand the devastating results of this BS bill.

"The cost of running a business has declined drastically and the savings has yet to be forwarded to the worker." I don't know what universe you live in...I to live in Washington State and the cost of running a business has never been higher. Unemployment taxes and L&I rates are at an all time high. B&O taxes are up. The sales tax rate was recently increased in Washington State....you obviously don't own a business.
