Interesting discussion about how to save the government tons of money. Somewhat like the work programs they had in the 30;s. Please read the link below and tell me what you think. Myself I am undecided

What, being forced to pay taxes to fund these wars YOU helped lie us into wasn't enough? And if we want to opt out we can't use any of the services we were FORCED to pay into either? Go to hell New York Times.

I agree with you. But I see it as only fair that the rich sacriface right along with the poor

It would never happen though, you'd just wind up with the rich kids getting deferments then becoming politicians and starting more wars. As far as people being allowed to opt out for community service that's obviously not as bad. But it's still a nasty slippery slope. And if it's anything like the inane proposal outlined here for a lot of people it's going to be a huge waste of their time and money.

Or the rich kids parents will get them into the guards and they can go AWOL like little george and later use it to be seen as a hero

This smacks of FDR's socialist National Recovery Act program that was ruled unconstitutional and disbanded. Paraphrasing someone else here, but it amounts to hiring 1500 people with spoons to do the job of one earth moving machine. Huge waste of taxpayer dollars. And if I wanted my children forced into military service, I'd move to Israel.

I hate to tell you this, but as an old woman I don't think I want to be aided by the yahoo's some people are raising today. Nor do I want my grandchildren, especially my beautiful grand daughters to be subjected to the caring hands of the military.

Yes I too saw it as a double edged sword. We need the job programs but we also don't want that much government control over our children.

It's not just the government control. Do you have any idea how many military women have been molested or raped by their comrades in arms? I've heard a lot of tearful stories. I don't trust the government agencies to watch over a dog, much less a kid.

I have heard of many other plans similar to this and have always thought that some sort of service to the country should be required of anyone who expects to reap the benefits of freedom.
Two areas I would emphasize is better pay for those who choose to go directly into active duty and for those who opt out entirely would be held to that without any loopholes added later.

It is sort of what JFK said when he stated ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.

He was just taking office. I have read that one of the reasons he was killed is because he wanted to bring them home.

He most definitely escalated our involvement extensively and crossed the line of just a handful of armed advisors to a militia on foreign soil.

There was a lot going on at the time and S. Vietnamese Pres. Diem was being a pain in the ass. He wouldn't cooperate or negotiate with anyone.

He, along with his brother were captured in a C.I.A. led coup that Kennedy was fully aware of. However, they were supposedly given the choice to exile, instead 'escaped', were recaptured and executed.

Whereas Kennedy knew of the coup in advance, he was not informed of the plan to assassinate them and wasn't even briefed about it until after it happened.

He was assassinated exactly 20 days later. There were many, including Sam Giancana that he had burned and they wanted him gone.

He had a lot of problems with the CIA and in facty wanted to get rid of them. There could have been many reasons why he was killed

Oh.... there were tons of reasons and there's no way in Hades, Lee Harvey Oswald was able to put all the necessary pieces together on his own.
Just the decision to remove the bullet-proof lid on the limo was the key to the entire plan.
I've heard the 'story' told that he supposedly wanted the people to 'see' him, but that would have been over-ruled by the top officials in the Secret Service had they not been well aware of what was going to happen that day.

It was a meticulous plan that many had as hand in. He pissed off the mob after they put him in office, he pissed off people during the Bay of Pigs, he caved to Khrushchev and removed our missile defenses from Turkey..... the list is long.

Even Oswald's 'execution' caught on live camera was a joke. Watch the actions of those around him just before Ruby takes the shot. They knew it was coming and gave him plenty of room.
