Two teens in a same-sex relationship were stopped from attending their Catholic school’s prom.

The school states, “As a Catholic high school, we uphold every teaching of the Catholic Church. The policies and procedures of our school reflect those teachings.”

Since it is a Catholic school under Catholic teachings, Is this Fair or Wrong?

I think it's wrong even though I understand why the school did it.
Still, they're human beings and should have the same rights as everyone else.

That's totally fair and completely within their rights as a church regulated school.

The two teens must be aware of the school's stance, and should be able to accept that as how it is. Perhaps a move to another school or religion might be best?

It's fair in that the Catholic Church is a private institution which has it's own rules and can enforce those rules as they see fit. What would be wrong is if these two women continued to support a church that flat out told them "we find you to be an abomination against the will of god and your kind are not welcome." That would be wrong, yet many homosexuals do.

I'm not sure the Catholic Church would see itself as a private institution - I am sure it is more likely to perceive it's place as being a voice for God, or more accurately, the voice of God. This might go a long way to explain how homosexual persons continue to support the church, as they believe it is the voice of God, and so think 'Where else could I go?'

It should be born in mind that the voice of God has always been against active involvement in same-sex active relationships, or indeed, any active sexual relationship outside of a proper marriage. This would include much of current popular lifestyle - choices. Tough truths, perhaps, but you don't get to Heaven on a feather bed, as they say. It is a work taking all we have got, and even then, it is by faith we are saved AFTER ALL WE CAN DO!!

I used to be Catholic, but wasn't happy with their doctrine and beliefs, so prayed about it, and was led to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, (LDS church), which supports the Gospel standards, while loving those who find it hard to live up to them, and supports and helps them move towards living the standards. It might seem hard, but it works

On an emotional level, I think it is wrong and discriminatory and is the last thing one needs as a teenager. I can understand the school having rules, its the rules that need to change. I just read its a Catholic School, so I doubt the rules will change. As far as I know in the Old Testament there is nothing proscribing Lesbianism. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If you are upholding the teachings of the catholic church as a school, why haven't you ejected the two lesbian students and any other gay students?

In any case, they shouldn't bother trying to go to catholic school prom, it's just guys on one side of the room and girls on the other and if either sex tries to mingle/converse, the nuns go in with metersticks and start wailing on them. (In case you're too daft to figure it out, I'm going for humour here.)

Remember chaps: Religion is poison for your mind. Having a clean, poison free mind is the first step to having a better life. A life free from the worry that a so-called "holy light" is going to send you to a "lake of fire" for all eternity for being human and experiencing/being/having natural things (such as anal sex, lust, sexual urges, masturbation, homosexuality, etc.)

It's really not even a question of fairness but more a question of stance of a private institution. I think it is hypocritical of the Church in light of all of the homosexual priest abuses of children but the church is also the biggest bulwark against homosexuality and in order to participate a follower must adhere to their rules. I'm not sure why the lesbian students are still permitted to attend the school though.

If they're allowing gay students to even go to their school, it's not fair that they be banned from attending the prom.

Could you image the storm that would brew if they threw the gay child out. The do not have to promote lifestyles they do not like, by allowing a gay couple to attend an event it is promotion.

Well, I still think that if they don't support the gay lifestyle then they shouldn't allow gay students in the first place. It's not fair that they be accepted as students, but aren't allowed to participate in normal student activities.

You are seeking fairness where none should be. If they discriminated against homosexual students upon entry, that would be a litmus test that would fail a court challenge. Once in the institution the school has much more latitude to promote or control behavior. The student has a good legal case if denied entry due to sexual preference. The student has no case if trying to participate in a school function outside set standards. If that gay student was denied entry you would be advocating that they be allowed in. Your whole argument is a cliche.
