"Legitimate rape" rarely leads to pregnancy, according to GOP nominee for US Senate from Missouri

Todd Akin, the Republican candidate favored to win the Senate seat up for election in Missouri, believes that in cases of what he calls "legitimate rape" a woman's body somehow goes through changes that make pregnancy extremely rare. He is using this belief to justify his stance that any woman who becomes pregnant by rape should be required to carry her rapist's baby to term, and give birth to the rapist's baby.

Weird Science at its finest! It's interesting that a British source carried this story. It was probably too crazy for even the National Enquirer.

I would choose to vote for Mr. Akin if most of his beliefs & values were congruent with getting the country back on track from an economic standpoint, as well as his stance on Big Government. Unlike many Americans, I vote for a candidate that is most compatible with the Constitution & the freedoms of citizens on a variety of issues, not just one or the one that most affects me personally.

He died in 1982, but not before he told all his nieces and nephews of the problems that Germany went through and what it was that brought the Fascists to power in Germany. He also gave us a warning that when we saw religious organizations banning together to back a political party and the industrialist/uber rich backing the same political party you should do everything possible to prevent it because it would be the beginning of the end of our Representative Constitutional Republic.

He also made us recite this very short but telling sentence "WHEN Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag (of nationalism) and carrying a Cross" [quote attributed to Sinclair Lewis] (He didn't say what kind of cross, it was understood he meant the twisted cross -- the swastika.

When you remove the power of the government from the people and eliminate the middle class, and begin attacking minorities, you have Fascism on the rise.

You're a leftist. Independent people have more objectivity & more sense than you.

No, I'm not being "played". Like you, I'm a normal, everyday grandparent who is concerned about their country & about what this POTUS is doing to it. He's an anti-colonialist, like his father, & is determined to bring this country down to its knees.

Just telling someone I'm a Christian nowadays, I'm considered a "RWNJ" or "terrorist", etc. I am the "average" person in this country where it comes to political beliefs. I am also pro-choice & for separation of church & state. There are MANY Tea Party members who believe the same as me. Christians are NOT trying to create a "Christo-Fascist Theocracy". You've been watching too much MSNBC. There are nutcases in EVERY group, Reps, Dems, Libertarian & Independents. In fact, I've heard many nutty conspiracy theories coming from some independents.

Your last paragraph has nothing at all to do with the Tea Party group. Again, you've been watching too much left-wing media (which is almost all media today) lie to you & you've fallen for the crap, hook, line & sinker.

I hardly watch TV at all. I work the ranch and take breaks as I need them. I KNOW what I was told by my great uncle and it matches with what is happening right now in our country and around the world.

I suggest your step back a few paces and look around before this poem comes true.

First they came for the socialists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
    and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

    Then they came for me,
and there was no one left to speak for me.

    Martin Niemöller (1892–1984)

You can substitute almost any group in here and they should be very much afraid.

This point in time is frankly buckle down and put people to work. No more wars, no more foreign aid -- we have enough to do right here in the US. Move back to the MIDDLE politically and if necessary twist a few tits in the religious groups to get the hell out of politics. Revoke the ruling of the SCOTUS on Citizens United and limit the spending on campaigns to the campaigns themselves. Donations cannot be more than $250 per candidate per person. Corporations, Unions, religious organizations etc NONE of them can campaign for propositions or candidates. State propositions limited to $100 per person.

All income to be treated equally as far as taxes are concerned, by revamping the entire tax code down to about 50 pages. (friend of mine did that and presented it as his doctorate thesis in college. He really stirred up a hornets nest but it worked, in theory)

There is a lot more too, but I'd be typing until midnight.

We really are not that far apart when you look at the necessity to address the REAL problems FIRST and sort our the fluff later. Bickering over things like same sex marriage and religion in public schools are fluff. If the middle class are not working and the working poor do not have a living wage then the society WILL FAIL. There is no question in my mind that we are on the brink of Fascism because of the failure to address the jobs needed by the Middle class who are the real engine behind our economy. For every $25000 that goes out of the country, we Loose a job. Our current trade imbalance is in the BILLIONS of dollars. Our failure to halt the flow of jobs out of the country appalls me.

32 years ago I saw this happening and was very upset that no one was doing anything to stop this flow of jobs out of the country. I'd say something and people would say I was nuts. We'll always be the greatest country in the world. Nope we won't. By shear numbers, China and India are going to become the two major economic powers of the planet, with Japan, the US and Brazil pulling up short behind them. Germany, (the European Union) will be in the mix too. But far more that any other than China and India will be the development of Africa. But that is a whole other subject direction.

The real point is that if we don't do something within the next 18 months to put Americans back to work we will pull down the entire world economy into a depression. PERIOD. Absolutely NONE of the major economists are at all happy with what has happened in the stalemate in Congress. The current trend, if not stopped very soon, will result in another down grade in the US credit rating. That is unavoidable if at least another 2% of our citizens are not put back to work within that 18 months. IT WILL NOT MATTER IF IT IS Obama as President or Romney as President. What will matter is if the Middle Class is allowed to survive in the process. It that does not happen then we can look forward to a depression in 2017 or 2018 and at the latest 2020.

That is why 30 years ago I started becoming totally independent of the economic system of our nation. I own a farm which is not 98% energy independent. It is totally food independent - I can feed about 75 people year round if it is fully developed. My family knows what I think is happening and they agree with me. This is not a new thing for me, it has been my lifetime goal to become independent of the system and I have accomplished that.

My calling him names is more about me being a woman who had a friend female go through the experience of being violated. So I don't take it lightly when someone tries to legitimize rape and how it feels everyday for a woman to go out knowing off the bat you are the inferior sex to a man. You buy the "gaffe" but as I saw it as clear as day the man thought he knew what he was saying and was backing it until he got the spotlight on him for his idiocy. He wasn't apologizing when he made those assinine comments or trying to correct himself he did so after he figured out what he said was wrong. So you buy his excuse, and I'll keep my opinion on the jerk.

As you pointed out so eloquently, you are biased & your answer is based on subjective "feelings". I understand that. Unlike you, I would hate for a life to be judged on one moment in time when a stupid & insensitive comment was made. We have all "been there, done that", but unfortunately when politicians do it, it's often in front of the whole world. Our world has become so desensitized by gossip-mongers & maligners. So, its citizens seem to think that they have a right to judge everyone else, throwing stones when they themselves live in glass houses. That was my point. So, you buy your excuses, & I'll keep my eye on the big picture.
  • Krystle JAA 2012/08/23 08:28:44
    Krystle
I understand about the throwing stones and living in glass houses. And I do understand your point about him being under a microscope of the entire country to judge. But I will not show sympathy for someone who "misspeaks" about a females body and something as serious as rape. And I will not sweep his comments under the rug either, he is a politician after all; they are supposed to say things to make sure they don't turn the public against them. He should have checked his sources more thoroughly before he got in front of the camera and made a complete ass of himself while offending most of the female population. And nothing I've said about this man was an excuse to dislike him. He gave me enough reasons getting on camera. And I hope that big picture is bright enough for you.
