We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘Open with a joke.’ It’s time-tested advice for public speaking, it’s intended to make the audience warm up to you. The trick is to find the right joke for the crowd you’re speaking to. So what do you go with if you’re speaking to the annual rally of the Ozarks Tea Party? Keep in mind that the Tea Party is definitely not racist:

“A black kid asks his mom, ‘Mama, what’s a democracy?’

“‘Well, son, that be when white folks work every day so us po’ folks can get all our benefits.’

“‘But mama, don’t the white folk get mad about that?’

“‘They sho do, son. They sho do. And that’s called racism.’”

That “sho” is a thigh-slapper. The good old boy-types in Arkansas thought so anyway, they laughed and applauded.

You don’t think it’s funny? Maybe I’m just not telling it right. You can hear Arkansas Tea Party Board Member Inge Marler tell it here. She does the voices, and everything.
