KONY 2012 Part II: Has Invisible Children Improved Its Approach?

KONY 2012, Invisible Children's controversial awareness program aimed at taking down African warlord Joseph Kony, seemed dead in the water when co-founder Jason Russell suffered a public breakdown. It looked like Invisible Children would retreat from the spotlight to regroup, and it did... for a couple of weeks. Now, just one month later, they're back with another documentary video, "KONY 2012 Part II: Beyond Famous."

This time they appear to have cut down a bit on editing costs and kicked off the video with clips of critics, then launched into a direct response, admitting they could barely keep up with the conversation. There's less filler, and the facts are, by necessity, up-to-date. However, they did block comments on YouTube and disable ratings, and they're still convinced there's a path to success, and that awareness is essential.

The narrator explains, "Invisible Children is just one of many organizations on the ground, and we are not the first. Stopping the LRA violence is possible, but it will take increased support for the comprehensive efforts conceived and led by local leaders." It goes on to describe a "multi-pronged approach": Early-warning radio networks in endangered areas, radio broadcasts and flyers telling members and captives of the LRA how to escape, and rehabilitation efforts in affected communities, and finally, combined military force from regional governments. But, the question is: are you buying it?

There's children dying every day EVERYWHERE, not just Uganda... I don't see why everybody wants to do something about it now. In 4/20 I'm gonna get high, not put posters of KONY 2012 everywhere.

Considering that Invisible Children Inc. takes in 13 million a year and only 8% actually goes to where it needs to go, on top of the fact that Kony's been dead since 2006, no. In fact, it just proved how stupid the youth of America can be.

The problem with post colonial Africa and I mean sub-Saharan Africa is they are simply primitive and comparatively backward. No amount of 'white guilt' will change that.

I worked in South Africa for nearly 2 years voluntarily and have resigned myself to the sad reality 13 years down the line.

OK, sure, Kony 2012 is flawed. It's phony. It may or may not be inspired by greed, may or may not be run by a madman. But that's no reason to portray Kony is a humorous light. It's no reason to make jokes about what is going on, or what has gone on, with the LRA, Kony, and the situation at large in the central region of Africa. Invisible Children may be a ripoff and a joke, but the cause is not. Can we be civil and show some sympathy toward the actual cause?

Africa, a basket case since the nationalist movements of the 1960's. Tribalism & feifdoms made a comeback, like before colonialism. Idi Amin

However, I'm not sure why people support Susan komen's pink ribbon fight against breast cancer.....it's a complete joke. The Kony 2012 nonprofit makes ~$120,000.00 annually and about ~80% goes to the actual cause. The pink ribbon nonprofit makes ~$500,000.00 annually and only ~39% of the funds goes to the actual cause.....

I think this highlights certain unwarranted sensitivities to certain groups and the people that support the pink ribbon nonsense should be outrage.....ofcourse some of them may be getting kickbacks from the nonprofit as well.

Let me fix that for you skippy

    Invisible Children:
-Only 32% of money raised went to direct services (if you support the issue you may want to choose a more worthwhile charity).
-Their accountability and transparency is a 2 out of 4 stars on charity navigator.
-The group is in favor of direct military intervention, and their money supports the Ugandan government’s army and various other military forces.
    - Foreign Affairs has claimed that Invisible Children (among others) “manipulates facts for strategic purposes, exaggerating the scale of LRA abductions and murders and emphasizing the LRA’s use of innocent children as soldiers, and portraying Kony — a brutal man, to be sure — as uniquely awful, a Kurtz-like embodiment of evil.”

when the kony 2012 video was shown to locals in Uganda, their reaction was to throw stones at the screen and drive the IC staff out of town,. the vid was so offensive to the people of Uganda. the four dudes who run IC pay themselves $90 grand a year, and use 80% of the donations to globe trot the world and make films to sell themselves and attract more donations from idiots. There are plenty of real NGOs that put their money into actuall helping people, like water for people, doctors without borders, unlike IC, .these organizations don't spend all the donations on advertising, they're quietly in the worst places in the world,. doing the right thing, unlike the IC staff like Mr. Russell, who seems to have a problem with masturbating in public.

I believe nothing for we know nothing. This is perhaps a scheme to get are money, but it may not be. Is Kony already dead, maybe, but who can confirm. Obviously not you and your "sources". Does this have to do with China and the oil in Uganda, plausible. However they're saying Kony has moved into the Congo, which puts up a wave of confusion. Trust no one, but listen to them.

No from their previous actions I don't buy anything they say. Did anyone see where the majority of the money goes. I read a report on this. Find a group that actually does what it says it will and not scam the people.

There's no reason we can't do our part. Sure, I won't spend money, but how hard is it to raise awareness?
