Just like the young & healthy have to fight the wars because they are the only ones that can, it is the duty of the rich to pay down the debt. True or false ?

The wealth of the rich has been achieved solely from the labor of the working class people who are paying the bulk of taxes from an already too small paycheck. While the rich enjoy tax cuts for their corporations and income brackets. There has never been a fair wage and benefits package for the employees. The goal of the rich is to bankruptcy the working class and further enslave them economically as they continue to reap the benefits of others. There are NO self-made wealthy.

They already DO pay down the debt. The top 10% of earners contribute over 50% of the federal tax revenue. They are already paying a disproportionately high amount of money.

Enough with the tax breaks for those who can afford to pay. I don't see why they should receive preferential treatment, while the average working person does not get a break. Only once, when President Obama took office, did the middle class get a tax break.

A few super wealthy people, who pay little or no taxes, push for war and profit from it. Let them pay for it ! Most all of our political leaders are also war profiteers, owning much stock that goes up with their actions.

An unusually specious statement even for SH; it is not only the young and healthy who fight the wars, nor is it only the rich who pay down the debt.

Who has a better claim to be "fighting the war", the 20 y/o NCO shuffing papers in the Pentagon or the 60 y/o defense contractor teaching marksmanship in Kabul? Who's "paying down the debt", the SW Airlines Pilot who's paying the top income tax rate on his sole income, his SW Airlines paycheck, or the "farmer" who uses a generous - but far from a majority - portion of his crop subsidies to pay off all his taxes? Or both of both? Or neither of either?

Nobody is paying down the debt, and most of the Americans KIA or that lost limbs from IEDs, etc are/were under 40 yrs old.

The american public IS paying down the debt... Problem is, the politicians are running it up faster than we can pay it down.

Additionally, it takes a lot more than frontline troops to run a war. It takes experience.

Look, I'm not trying to pick any fight w/ you. I wasn't doing so when I responded above and, having just referenced your profile, I'm even less inclined to, given my perception of our sharing a basic similarity in appreciation of America. However, I'm a fairly unapologetic nitpicker. I believe in the draft because I believe not just that it's a duty of the young and the able to serve their country, but that there are personal and societal benefits to be reaped from requiring that that be done. Moreover, I even more strongly believe that the wealthy have a moral obligation to pay their fair share of America's bills, and I'm appalled at a Congress that has so muddled up the IRC that reconciling this moral obligation with a complex legal obligation has made discharge - indeed, cognition - of the moral obligation virtually an impossible task. I don't think you disagree very much, if at all, w/ what I just said - maybe you do, but I don't think so; my point was/is that your inquiry isn't likely - IMHO - to generate thoughtful comment in such regard.

I haven't been on SH in months, so didn't expect much in the way of 'thoughtful' comments, but hearing Hannity, Rush, etc, complain about taxes even though they backed these wars, while so many of our young men are getting their balls blown off from stepping on IEDs, I just get ill.

It is everyone's place to add to the pay off be it a small amt or the wealthy and their higher payments. The People seem to keep electing these self centered jerks. No one fights to get rid of lobbyists that are a big drain on the economy. There are so many that want something for nothing and think it's owed them better step up to the plate and realize No one owes you anything.unless you are a member of our Military. No one is
asking that you are taxed at the same rate as the very wealthy and Rich.People will not flinch at paying huge Union Dues and have to kiss up to your crooked Unions and let them run your life and thinking. And never a complaint from the brainwashed.

Almost 60 percent of federal revenue is from the Rich already (approx 5% of the population), over 50 percent of the population pays no federal tax....who's getting squeezed? I will say that I don't condone ridiculous CEO and executive pay, just as I don't condone major sports figures earning ridiculous money as well....the whole system is screwed up of people thinking and believing their contributions warrant millions of dollars....

There are two sides to every story. Also if the rich continue to support the lower half of this country, plus the illegals, they soon will be broke too. They already contribute enough. I believe in a fair tax.
rich continue support country illegals broke contribute fair tax Fair tax

After WW-II, national debt was also at 100% of GDP. Top tax rate was 91%

The 1950's were a period of prosperity and growth, despite high debt and high taxes on the wealthy..

We've faced this situation before, and we can fix it the same way again.

The rich should have to actually hire Americans to get the tax cuts, and there needs to be tax reform for the working-poor also...no more tax credits just for having kids ! I also think Medicaid should be cut out for all these families that could get insurance through their work...or at least they should have to pay co-pays !

It is the responsibility of every person in our country! Why? Because if we don't get it under control guess who pays, the poor. The poor will always get the brunt of the pain as they are now.

If you tax the rich at too high a rate, they won't be rich for long, or they will leave the US. Our current level of debt is as good an argument for bankruptcy as any. The resulting lowering of the US credit rating would force our government to "live" within its means.

I agree - bills have to be paid. But, the continued spending needs to be stopped, also. I just don't believe that government thinks they have a blank check with no accountablility.
