Insurance companies serve a good purpose. Even health insurance. They allow you to pay a small payment on a monthly basis, and if you have a need, you essentially have the capability to be protected from a huge hit. And they are number 9 on the list of profitable companies, with about a 10% yearly profit.

To put that in easy to understand terms, if you were running an average Small business in the USA your gross income for the year would be about $300,000, so if your profit was 10% you would be working for a whole year for $30,000. Not a huge amount of money actually. And just above poverty level now.

Are you aware of what it can cost if you have a heart attack? $200,000 is for a very minor one. And can go up to $500,000 for Bypass surgery. Makes that $350 a month you pay for health insurance seem like a pretty good deal.

Car insurance for example. Maybe $2000 a year? Mine is actually $1200 a year.

But Iif you get in an accident, and have a bill for the other persons car of $5000 and maybe another $5000 for yours, a few thousand for Medical for you and your passengers, and perhaps the cost of a law suit if you were at fault. Makes that $1200 - $2000 per year look like a pretty good deal.

And of course young folks would like to not pay insurance while they are well. But as I asked before, if you did not have insurance and had a $200,000 heart attack tomorrow, what would you do? And that is a really low level heart attack. Requiring just one Stent.

Or suppose you were diagnosed wit Breast cancer tomorrow? That is in the range of $600,000 in most cases just for the Chemo.

You are right about gambling. You are gambling that you will get sick and need the insurance, they are gambling you won't.

All business is there to makle a profit. Otherwise they could not stay in business. Do you have a clue as to how much Apple makes in profit yearly? And does so by having all its products made in China by over 500,000 chinese workers. You support some business every time you go out your door. And if they were not making a profit, you surely would not be living the comfortable life you take for granted. And one the government cannot provide you with for long.
