Judge Bans Pro-Life License Plates Unless North Carolina Also Issues Opposing Plates: Should NC Offer Pro-Choice License Plates?

States offer a variety of special interest license plates that allow people to express themselves and help raise money for the state. North Carolina planned to issue a pro-life license plate that read, “Choose Life.” A federal judge ruled the special interest plate unconstitutional and banned North Carolina from distributing the plate unless it also offered special interest license plates promoting abortion rights.

The federal judge made the ruling in response to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of North Carolina Legal Foundation's lawsuit, which argued that the government cannot create an avenue to express only one side of a political argument.

California offers several special interest license plates that promote environmental causes, such as the Coastal Commission, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite Conservancy. California also offers a Memorial License Plates to promote law enforcement against terrorism. The ACLU has yet to file a lawsuit opposing these plates.

Does the ACLU's lawsuit and judge's ruling promote or censure free speech? Should State's have special interest license plates?

Pro choice is just pro abortion. abortion will never be illegal so it is a moot point

Unless pro-choice ones are also made. But honestly, this is a really stupid idea. It's asking for trouble. I'm all about voicing my opinion but I still have a brain. You wouldn't catch me with that crap on my car.

Honestly, I don't see how pro-lifers could support this. It's just a way of profiting from abortion.

They shouldn't offer any kind of license plates with a political message.

Allow a Planned Parenthood license plate and call it even of course Planned Parenthood is primarily a women's reproductive health group as only 3% of their overall spending is for abortion services. The rest is for preventing pregnancies, STD detection, prevention and treatment for women and men and reproductive cancer treatment and prevention however it would help replenish the funds they are losing from people who wish to perpetrate the myth that tax dollars are used to fund abortions (that's illegal).

Dig the sarcasm! It's apparently 'wrong' to teach about protection from disease and pregnancy, but popping out babies (and especially single teenage mothers) is all fine and dandy.

That depends. If they're going to have one side of the debate, they have to have both. But that said.... here's my real opinion.

PLEASE, let's have NEITHER . There's far too much abortion, abortion, abortion in the public arena! Adding it to license plates is just a distraction. This is one issue that just doesn't belong in politics, in my humble opinion. Can't we just let it go? What is the point?

Because in most states you have to get 200+ people to pay for the special tag before the state will make it... I guess they couldn't get 200+ Pro Baby killers to sign up.

OHHHH. ok. So then why are banning pro-life ones? It's a free expression and it's not harming anyone?

It is freedom of expression in America, no one should be held back, from excercising their rights, as long as it is within the laws.

This license plate says nothing about abortion. Wow people assume too much.

Would "Pro-lifers" defend the baby's life even if its an illegals?

What does one have to do with the other? People who break immigration law should be deported. But, that has nothing whatsoever to do with defending a baby's life.

Joseph and Sonya Smith didn't whip their son with glue sticks and then lock him in a closet, no, of course not. That was Legion, the soldier of the devil! So any punishment they doled out to the child was in full self-defense! (The 'Legion' stuff isn't a joke, just read the links, lol).

Jeffrey and Marci Beagley weren't doing anything wrong when they chose prayer in place of medicine for their son's urinary tract infection, or their granddaughter's pneumonia and blood infection. Obviously if God had wanted either of them to live, HE would have cured them, not some Godless doctor!

I see what you're saying, but there maybe a bit of a difference between private political advertising on the side of a bus and having your personal license plate stamped with a political message.

Ads on the sides of (and in the interior of) city/county buses have a long history of presence and they also change often. If there is an ad on a the side of a bus that is offensive to the public, it can be removed. License plates are produced by the states and are much more permanent. Maybe therein lies the difference? The ads on the sides of buses are not produced by the states and are not permanent, licensee plates are much more so.

Again, that is why we have bumper stickers.
