Jordan's King Abdullah seeking divorce from Palestinians

Chaya2010 2012/04/13 03:47:10

Jordanian King Abdullah wishes to finish what his late father King Hussein began - full separation from the Palestinians.

http://www.jpost.com/HttpHandlers/ShowImage.ashx?ID=183209

King Abdullah is seeking to complete the divorce proceedings between Jordan and the Palestinians which his late father, King Hussein, began in 1988.

The separation began in July that year, a few months after the eruption of the first intifada.

King Hussein realized back then that it was not in the interest of his kingdom to maintain a linkage to the West Bank, home to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

His biggest fear was that the intifada would spill over into Jordan, where the Palestinian majority would rise against his monarchy.

By cutting off Jordan’s legal and administrative ties with the West Bank, King Hussein signaled his desire to part from the Palestinians living there. Jordanians and Palestinians at the time hailed the decision as a positive step toward the Palestinians establishing a state of their own.

But many Jordanians felt that the divorce had not been completed given the fact that most Palestinians living in the kingdom continue to hold Jordanian citizenship.

In recent years, King Abdullah has faced calls from fellow Jordanians to act quickly to ensure that the separation from the Palestinians would be completed.

In 2009, Amman quietly began revoking the Jordanian citizenship of thousands of Palestinians, triggering strong protests from human rights organizations and pro-Palestinian groups around the world.

Over the past year, Jordan has witnessed increased demands for reforms and democracy. The “Arab Spring” that has been sweeping the Arab world has prompted thousands of Jordanians to take to the streets every week to demand real changes and freedoms.

The growing protests have clearly embarrassed and confused King Abdullah, who is feeling the heat approaching him rapidly.

The monarch’s biggest fear is that the powerful and popular Muslim Brotherhood organization would form an alliance with the Palestinians and turn against his regime, seriously undermining his grip on power.

King Abdullah is now hoping that a new electoral law would prevent both the Islamists and Palestinians from gaining victories in the upcoming parliamentary election, scheduled for later this year.

Talk in Israel and elsewhere about turning Jordan into a Palestinian state has also left the king worried about the future of his kingdom. That explains why he is not even prepared to receive 1,100 Palestinian refugees who have fled Syria in recent weeks, while at the same time welcoming more than 100,000 Syrians who crossed the border into Jordan.

The Jordanians have no problem absorbing tens of thousands of Iraqis, Syrians and Libyans. But when it comes to the Palestinians, it’s a completely different story. The last thing King Abdullah needs is another 500,000 Palestinians in the country.

King Abdullah is now seeking to distance himself from the Palestinians. He says he wants the Palestinians to go to the West Bank and Gaza Strip and establish their own state there, and not elsewhere.

The king feels reassured only when an Israeli or US official tells him that “Jordan is for the Jordanians and Palestine for the Palestinians.”

I've always had a great deal of respect for the Jordanian monarchy. King Abdullah's mother, Queen Nor, was an American, and I think really had a great deal of influence on her husband, King Hussein, and his social policies. I believe she also had a great deal of influence on her son, King Abdullah, who is probably the most western thinking head of state in the middle east (outside of Israel, of course).

I went to the News and Politics section. I keep seeing you posting, non-stop, flooding the section with what I can now only see as anti-Palestine post after post.

    Anti-Muslim in general in many.

I hope you know what you're doing...it's clear that you support Israel, but I will say that for this user, you've completely turned me off to your arguments. I find everything here profoundly biased...and even if it's not, your tactics have poisoned what might be good arguments for me at least.

Below...is a list of the well over 50 questions you have posted in the last 6 hours or so...exclusively about making Muslims look bad, and Israel look tragic.

I hope one day you can find a way to promote actual peace, instead of trying to gain peace through the destruction of an entire people you seem to perceive as an enemy.

I'm anti-religion, anti-theist I particularly hate Islam. There's a huge difference in hating religion and those that practice the religion.

If you choose to support or not support Israel its not my concern. I'm reassured that the majority of Americans support Israel for either religious reasons or its the moral, ethical and just thing to do. Most actually bother looking up the facts and evidence which reasonable people tend to do.

I'm can't deal with weasel talk I don't have a charter calling for genocide of an entire people or the destruction of at the state, I don't threaten other states with annihilation, nor do I fire 200 plus rockets over the last two months into other countries. You have a case of moral relativism.

If you don't like my posts don't comment, its really that simple I'm not interested in your whinging nor you misrepresenting what I've never written. Instead of taking my inventory worry about yourself or what I've actually written.

Anyone who actually bothers to look up the facts and evidence, as a reasonable person, would if honest find plenty to hold Israel accountable for in terms of profound human rights violations, don't you agree? If not, then I contend still that your bias seems to affect your position here.

That is not to say, of course, that Israel is at all the only, or even remotely the primary, aggressor or perpetrator. It is in a profoundly tenuous geopolitical position.

As for you having a charter or rockets...fine. Neither do most people.

"If you don't like my posts don't comment, its really that simple I'm not interested in your whinging nor you misrepresenting what I've never written. Instead of taking my inventory worry about yourself or what I've actually written."

Unfortunately, that's not your choice is it? If you're going to post here, constantly, then you get to deal with dissent. If you want to silence it, that's your choice...but if you expect to put your voice out there and expect that people who don't like it to just shut up...well, then you're really not interested in free speech but only your speech.

"I hope one day you can find a way to promote actual peace, instead of trying to gain peace through the destruction of an entire people you seem to perceive as an enemy" - where have I ever sought the destruction of an entire people? That's right I haven't.

Israel is held to a higher standard than any other nation on this planet as the condemnations and anti-Israel resolutions prove especially with compared to measurably worse countries be they the OIC, Congo, Zimbabwe, Turkey, Syria, China, Burma, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia to name a few. I challenge anybody and I mean anybody to name a single country faced with comparable threats as Israel that respects the rule of law and human rights as Israel does.

I don't see Israel bombing countries into the stone age whilst dragging other nations sons and daughters to fight, die and get maimed for it as the US has in Gulf War One, Iraq, Vietnam and Afghanistan despite spending more on its military that all the nations combined.. Israel doesn't have the death penalty, kidnap people in friendly states and take them to countries knowb to torture, no Israeli school has corporal punishment for children unlike 22 American states, no Israeli sells arms to some of the worlds worst regimes: Saudi, Egypt, Jordan or arms and trains the enemies ...

Israel doesn't have the death penalty, kidnap people in friendly states and take them to countries knowb to torture, no Israeli school has corporal punishment for children unlike 22 American states, no Israeli sells arms to some of the worlds worst regimes: Saudi, Egypt, Jordan or arms and trains the enemies of the US as the US does Fatah. Nor does Israel ethnically cleanse people like the UK and US did in Diego Garcia, we don't invade sovereign nations like the US did in Grenada, or test syphilis on South Americas or the African-American. Our LBGT's have better rights than they do in the US and we don't murder abortion doctors as some sort of national sport. In fact Israel does more to preserve life than any other nation exporting more life saving medical equipment than other nations. So whilst Israel is a work in progress it is light years ahead of any of its 22 Arab neighbours. You live where its neighbours Iranian terrorist proxies have 40,000 missiles pointed at you, have a constitution that is bent on the destruction of the state and genocide of Jews collectively and a country (Iran) that has threatened the state both implicitly and explicitly repeatedly whilst seeking nuclear weapons. Imagine 200 missiles fired onto Israel over the last two months and you think that Israel can have peace. I'm a realist and I'll continue to call out religion, especially Islam and the actions of a significant amount of Muslims.

I find it laughable that you elect to come to my page, complain and actually bother to count the responses to my posts. Don't like it don't comment, the world wont stop turning without your comments as for "free speech" - I don't live in a country where the is a constitutional right free speech and in case you haven't realized SH is a private company and when you agree to their TOS free speech goes out the window. Oh and if I wanted to silence you on my page it only takes a mouse click. Commenting on my posts is a privilege not a right.

I'll continue to put whatever I feel 'out there' I don't need your endorsement/approval don't flatter yourself.

It's remarkable how you've completely ignored my statement that Israel's tenuous geopolitical position, extreme position, in fact, is indeed a major factor in the situation...

It seems that you think, though, that such a thing excuses Israel from any criticism or fault for it's part in hostilities. You seem to think that pointing the finger at other nations for their faults offers the same excuse. In the end, though, none of that is a defense...it's just defensive.

As to saying that if one doesn't like your posts, then don't comment...again, if you want to only speak and not respond, not be challenged...then you know...start a blog. This is an opinion site.

It boils down to two things deal and scrutinize Israel with the same standard as any nation. Don't mouth equality do it. When you look around the world and see measurable and objectively WORSE nations and the WORST nations scrutinize condemn one of the best, ask WHY?

In the end there is NO nation faced with COMPARABLE I repeat COMPARABLE threats both internally and externally that respects the rule of law like Israel.

No, your British so you invaded and colonize. If you found yourself in the position YOUR people put the Palestinians in you'd be firing off the rockets. Perhaps if you Brits hadn't turned your back on the promises you'd made to these people we could have avoided the whole Middle East mess that Britain in its imperial glory created

I'm actually Israeli & a naturalized Brit don't jump to conclusions.Even if I was British born I've invaded and colonized nobody.

Nice to see that you have the temerity to justify terrorism and groups that not only call for genocide of a people collectively but actively seek to achieve this objective.

What promises did Britain make to the "Palestinians" - they were offered a state an refused in 1947? I'm not even going to bother telling you that around 70-80% of Jordanians are Palestinians nor will I tell you that 75% of the British Mandate Palestine is Jordan or should I mention that in the last 10 years alone "Palestinians" were offered statehood, land for peace and refused starting intafadas killing thousands of Israelis and in the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza they increased rocket attacks by 400-500% ontop of tens of thousands of missile attacks for 8 years. Then there's was Olmerts offer of land equaling 100% of West Bank that Abbas refused.

As for British colonial imperialism I'm not going to defend it or them. There were benefits of colonialism which can't be disputed. How about the US not arm gross human rights abusers like Saudi Arabia a record $60 billion, don't remove democratically elected leaders as the British and US did in Iran or arm them as you did Saddam and I...

How about the US not arm gross human rights abusers like Saudi Arabia a record $60 billion, don't remove democratically elected leaders as the British and US did in Iran or arm them as you did Saddam and Iran (as per the Iran-Contra affair) and maybe don't arm/train Fatah whilst invading Muslim countries making an already unstable region worse. Then there's a matter of $2billion to dictatorship of Egypt and the 900 or so bases across the world imperialism in all but name. Do you realize that having a base in Saudi actually infuriated the Islamist (Wahahbi world)?

Whilst finger pointing and criticism of Israel is good many Jews both in an outside Israel are its biggest critics, their needs to be perspective and stock taken of your own country and record not to mention countries that are worse.

So you are Israeli, not a Brit eh? I will ask you the same question. If it was you in the position the Palestinians are in, will you tell me that you would grovel on your knees and humbly accept the crumbs you are offered in exchange for the only lands you've ever known?

Oh, do tell me where I have justified terrorism? Standard deflection tactic from those who wish to avoid facing the atrocities committed by their own people. And don't get me going on America, they have just taken up where the British left off as global dictators and if there is anyone who should be sanctioned by the international community it is them.

I'm a non theist, anti nationalist. I don't give a crap about God, King or Country. I judge only on the toll of innocents, and in this tally the Palestinians are the least of the 'terrorists' and I'm sick and effing tired of them being portrayed as such and being subject to the whims of Westerners. Tell you what, if you think the offers made by Israelis to Palestinians are so fair, so just and should be accepted, why don't the Israelis take what they offer and let the Palestinians have what now comprises Israel?

    I'm not a theist.
I'm an agnostic/atheist of the Dawkins variety.
I'm a republican although the British Royal Family are not a problem or something I particularly lose sleep over.

If you are "sick and tired" of them being potrayed as terrorists I suggest two things:
    1. Speak to the US and EU
    2. Reconcile the fact that Hamas not only has a charter committed to genocide of Jewish people COLLECTIVELY and the destruction of the Jewish state, excuse their terrorism and the so called "Palestinian" refusal for land and peace specifically in the last 10 years: 97% in 2000, 100% unilateral disengagement of Gaza and Olmerts offering land equaling 100% West Bank.

Flawed reasoning Israel took their state and in 1947 the Arabs refused there's. Why should what was 75% of of the British Mandate which is Jordan and the land offered which Israel didn't need to do then be translated as giving up the state of Israel?

They've been offered land, they've waged countless wars (thankfully they've lost) they've refused and brought terrorism and Israel must give up their country. That's beyond absurd.

No, what is absurd is this notion that the land is Israels to give up. I have no wish to see the Jewish people denied a homeland, I would just like to see the partition of the former Mandate Palestine to conform to the 67 borders, with Jerusalem an open city belonging to nobody specifically. I by no means support terrorism or violence of any kind, but from my perspective there is a racist agenda of unilateral support for Israel and nothing but betrayal and oppression for the Arabic peoples by the West. Make no mistake, if the Palestinian people were offered the same support we have given to Israel for a half century extremists like Hamas or dogs like Arafat would find themselves outcasts. But because they receive nothing from the international community they turn to the extremists because they see no other option. Every deal that they have made with the Israelis has been reneged upon. The leadership of Israel, and its Western backers can provide whatever excuses they wish, but it doesn't change the fact that their word is worthless. Why would one accept any deal from a people who have shown time and time again that they will not honor their agreements?

If Iraq's disregard for a UN Resolution was good enough to justify imposing UN authority with savage aggression, when will Israel be held to account for its lengthy list of UN resolution violations? The nation with more violations of UN resolutions than any other, yet NOTHING is ever done. Nothing that is besides handing them even more weapons to further oppress their neighbors
