The Obama campaign has just been hit with a bit of a web-sponsored headache. Specifically, anyone who types in the addresses socialists.com or communists.com on their web browsers will find themselves redirected to…the Obama campaign website.

The Twitterverse is already reacting with no small degree of amusement – and in some cases, alarm – to this odd phenomenon. Take a look at a few of the reactions: It’s highly unlikely that the Obama campaign is responsible for this bit of ironic web-sponsored advertising. More likely, it is a prank being pulled by the campaign’s political opponents. The New York Times reports:

It was unclear who purchased the domain names to engineer this bit of not-so-subliminal messaging — in the apparent hope of fueling a belief among some conservatives that Mr. Obama is a socialist or communist.

Update - Many people have asked about why the domain "Socialists.com" was redirecting to the Obama campaign site earlier this week. Here is the real story; it is not nearly so sinister as the blogosphere supposes. This week, which is also the two-year anniversary of the law, the Supreme Court began hearing arguments on the constitutionality of Obamacare. This law, which was forced through Congress without thoughtful deliberation and debate, and despite the loud objections of the American people, is unconstitutional, and forces socialized medicine upon our free nation. Through it, the Federal Government forces citizens to purchase a commercial product, even if they choose not to, for the first time in our nation's history. It is a giant step toward Socialism, and removes free choice from many. We also believe that it will result in forced rationing of care, by putting those critical health care decisions in the hands of government bureaucrats, rather than in the hands of the individual, and the family, where it should be. It is a Federal Government takeover of 1/6 of the entire U.S. economy. And its mandate that all citizens must purchase insurance is unconstitutional. It removes the right of free will ...

It removes the right of free will from American citizens. Obamacare is a threat to our sovereignty. We simply wanted to encourage critical thought, and to draw attention to the matter by redirecting this domain to the Obama campaign's "I Like Obamacare" page. And it did. That's over now, but we hope that the critical thought continues as Supreme Court continues to consider this important matter. Below you will find some very good articles about this topic, please read them for more information.

I typed in 'socialists.com' and it brings up 'conservatism.com', with the tag line of 'returning to the roots of our founding fathers' next to a photo of Ronald Reagan.
    conservatism
The same happened when I typed in 'communists.com'.
