This umber fluctuates from week to week, allowing for everyone to think either the sky is falling or there's rosy times ahead. A better way to look at this data would be with a four week floating average.
On a slightly different note: Those numbers we hear about large numbers of people who are no longer looking for work, so therfore the unemplyment rate is soooo much higher.
Don't believe for a minute that these people are no longer looking for work. They still are, but in the meantime they've found "off ledger" jobs that pay cash and are not reported by either parties involved. There's a very large "off ledger" employment base in this country, and it's not just the illegal trades, ie drugs, prostitution, etc. Many construction and farming jobs are "off ledger".

Um, considering the numbers and the facts just reported ... yeah ... It's getting worse.

And housing prices are still falling in most area's. The Average family net worth has dropped 39% in the last four years. The real unemployment number that they hide is over 17%. We have added more national debt in the last three-and-a-half years than did Bush (also a spend happy, big-gov, progressive) in eight years. But more compelling is ... more debt in three-and-a-half years than from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined. In my view, this country will not recover from where we are. It will collapse. Which is the plan.

I saw that a PetSmart was hiring, or at least it looked like it was hiring. I was informed, though, that they probably weren't actually hiring, they just have to "look like they are" by an employee.

I think it really depends on what part of the country you are in. In the Seattle area it is not where we would like it but it is better.

Everyone I know personally who has looked for a job in the last few years has found one. They were all low tech and unskilled jobs though. Our biggest problem is during all those years when Bush gave the businesses the big tax breaks, they moved a lot of them to other countries. The idea that continuing the tax breaks could help create more jobs is the definition of insanity. Keep doing the same thing and hope it will turn out differently. Duh!! The U.S. needs new industry, clean power, affordable electric cars. We can fix unemployment and become a viable power in the world again if we lead the world in new technologies that free us from the high volume of oil we now use. If everyone pays an equal and fair tax based on 10 or 15%, we stop paying for wars, we stop giving billions of dollars to Israel and we stop giving full retirement to politicians regardless of how much they've worked, we can get our budget under control. We don't need to pay bribes to keep businesses in America. We just need to make things operate more successfully. Oh and no more subsidies to oil companies. Pay it to the companies who come up with solutions to our problems, not the ones who keep ripping us off at the gas pumps

I'm sure you meant to say thanks World Recession, which was here before Obama took over. Please compare the success of job gains in the US to Europe as an entity (our most similar economy. We are doing better on unemployment by about 2%. And even China which cheats on its currency and uses political prisoners for labor has a slowing economy. I have compassion for your plight. Like mich 25 I struggled during the Reagan years; and tripled my income 1 year after Clinton took over. Please google who the economy does better under Dems or Republicans. It won't help your current situation but it may help you to realize that your
anger is misdirected and optimism will pull us out faster than blame and pessimism. I have read 2 surveys that show that if every business hired the people they say they need, unemployment would drop below 6 percent, which is considered normal unemployment. Fear and scare tactics by those who want to replace the President for political gain are costing us a total recovery. What kind of bastards make people suffer for their own gain.
Could it be large corporation managers who are making record salaries in dismal economic times? I'm just asking. but you're smart. You'll figure things out on your own.

Hhhmmm good point but mister promises (Obama) first attacks the oil field indestry and lots of us oil field workers lost jobs and Obama promised the US new jobs but guess what our Unemployment rate went up in his first two years of office and the only reason they have dropped is because if you give up your no longer classifed as unemployed. To be honest I could care less about other countries because well frankly I'm living in the USA. This depression is getting worse with this current Dem. and all he will do is make it worse the next four years. I say No Obama! If your smart you'd agree but the only people that don't agree is those that have their head to far up Obama's ass.

If King Odumba continues to refuse to cooperate with companies. They will continue to lay off workers. King Odumba continues to blabber mouths but does nothing. He blames others but he does nothing. He is clueless when it comes to solving economy crisis. So, he says he supports gay marriages instead. He has given up on jobs creations and fixing the economy crisis.

Until we get someone in the Oval Office and Change the Congress to remove the people ignorant of how to get out of the way and allow the Free Market to recover, then it will remain in double digits. Obama is repeating the same speeches he gave 4 years ago and claiming if we can give him 4 more years, he can do what he promised 4 years ago.

By every measure the economy is worse and by a greater degree than he claimed it would ever go. He lies, Pelosi and Reid lie and the fools just eat it up. He had two years where he could have implemented any policy he wanted and the democrats fought over the government healthcare plan. The House has sent dozens of jobs bills to the senate but Reid refuses to even bring them to the floor.

When you've never had a real job and never created a job, how can you make the claim you are the best choice for making the economy better?

The world is in economic meltdown, thanks to unregulated banking and lending. Yet the greatest resourses are lying under the earth in Africa. Forget Porsche and BMW, get someone to fund a mining programme and distribute the wealth throughout the planet, isn't that the purpose of the NWO ??

The job market seems to be picking up in high-tech, project management, and development, but the service industry seems to be stalling or falling behind - at least that's the trend in my area. Seems indicative of private investment money still flowing to companies that produce for the technology & social media markets, but service industries like restaurants, hotels, tourism, etc., are still getting squeezed because the average person/consumer is still spending a lot less.

No. Surveys show that if all companies that need people would hire now, unemployment would be below 6%. The problem is two fold. Some businesses are scared to hire in case the economy slides backward and secondly, some large businesses are finding that they can get their employees to do the work of 2 or even 3 people because workers are afraid to lose the job they do have. Do any of these words ring a bell to the middle class- serf? peon? slave? Quit giving middle class votes to the New Republicans. Its like driving yourself to your own execution.

IF, IF, IF.....yah, yah, yah,....No company is going to hire, expand, grow, with OBAMA and his destructive regulations and promises of increased taxation. He's a job killer!

If you can't see the logic in that you are not a businessman...you know ...one of those that OBAMA said did not succeed, did not build their own business...the government did it all.

The government under OBAMA has delusions of grandeur...time for OBAMA to go!

im sorry but romney is equally as pathetic as obama. this country is doomed if this 2 party warfare continues. nothing will change because nothing can get done when our government is controlled by 2 parties that are constantly at each others throats, not agreeing on anything. and with the general population buying into it and promoting it.......there will be no change for the simple fact that majority of us citizens share your point of view, and vice versa. i mean whens the last time you heard of gary johnson on our mainstream media?

Absolutely! Our economy has gotten worse. The first round of layoffs trimmed the excess fat, the second brought business down to running a skeleton crew, the final is the business closures (never to return).
Most of these people do not yet have a jobs that "pays a mortgage" and are no longer counted since their UE has run out.
The next round of employment numbers MUST reflect the number of hours each person is employed due to the fact that those working under 30 hrs are exempt from the Obamacare health tax law, now that should be very revealing!

The economy is not getting worse. The recovery is just slow because big businesses are profiting from people and small business being afraid because of scare tactics. Why hire 2 people when 1 scared person will do 2 jobs to keep the one he gets paid for. Meanwhile, CEOs continue to make 600 times more money than the AVERAGE worker does (THAT IS A LITERAL, NOT HYPERBOLIC FIGURE). The middle class needs to wise up to the New Repulican code of "do as we say, not as we do."

Please tell me which part of the economy is in recovery?

Manufacturing, gdp, UE, residential and commercial real estate, are all in shambles.
There are not enough jobs created to SUSTAIN much less grow, there are more work visa's than there are jobs created.
The bar has been lowered so far than a less than 1% growth is considered an accomplishment when 2% is what is the minimum to prevent another collapse.
There are now 129,000 less millionaires in our nation than before, who is going to make up the loss in the taxes they paid? No sympathy for those CEO's without jobs, sure I understand the envy factor.

I'm sorry, the only reason more foreclusures have not completed is that there are not enough sherriffs or judges or money to complete the legal process. It ain't over yet.

IDK about you, but our family has been touched by this economic mess and it continues to find more people in dire straights daily. US economy continues to decline

And Democrats need to wise up to Obama's message. From Franklin Roosevelt to Bill Clinton, Democrats knew that it is better to provide work than to provide handouts and cradle to grave benefits. Read FDR's 1935 state of the union message or Clinton welfare reform.
Yet Obama had $817B to spend on shovel ready projects and instead spent it on handouts and giveaways. Hardly any jobs created.
It is time to understand that Obama is not even close to following the principles of the Democratic Party traditions. He is currently trying to dismantle Clinton's bipartisian Welfare reform.
