Jimmy Carter to Address Democratic Convention: Good Move by DNC?

The Democratic National Committee will honor former President Jimmy Carter with a prime-time speech during its national convention on September 4, 2012. Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the 2012 convention chairman, released a statement: "A lifelong champion of human rights and investments in education and energy to spur economic development, President Carter will provide unique insight into President Obama’s ability to move our country forward and why we need his vision and leadership for a second term."

Mayor Villaraigosa and other Democrats must have overlooked how President Carter recently accused fellow Democrat President Obama of violating human rights. Carter wrote in the New York Times that Obama violated 10 of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Carter considered it “disturbing proof of how far our nation's violation of human rights has extended.”

President Carter will make the address via video. Carter joins a growing list of Democrats who won't attend the Democratic National Convention this year. Kevin Price of the US Daily Review speculates that the candidates don't want to appear associated with unpopular Democrats including President Obama (D), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

The list includes: Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.VA.), Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.VA.), Rep. Mark Critz (D-PA), Rep. Kathy Hochul (D-NY), Rep. Jim Matheson (D-UT), Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin (D-W.VA.), Rep. Bill Owens (D-NY), Rep. John Barrow (D-GA), Rep. Betty Sutton (D-OH) and Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX).

THEHILL.COM reports:
Former President Jimmy Carter will address the 2012 Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina by video. The Democratic National Convention Committee announced Tuesday that Carter would address the convention by video on September 4.

No I'm not - "large slate of potential nominees"

And I like how your tactic to avoid the real discussion is to claim I'm wrong and recite the rules - which show I'm right. That way you don't have to discuss something like Obamas award or the legitimate criticisms of problems within the system.

Its as if you're incapable of actually discussing problems or addressing concerns.

Good for them...taking the second worst POTUS in American history to back up the number one worst POTUS in American history. What could be more appropriate?

Thing about Carter is that he's very good for the base. He's sort of become the ideological Patriarch of the Party. People who agree with him will love his address.

The problem is that he acts fairly unPresidential in retirement. And this is because he has moved closer to the fringe - where everything Republicans do is evil and should be fought against. So, he rarely ever speaks in a nature befitting the office he held. Likely he'll get up and have some good words, but find a way to throw gas onto the partisan fire with some spite.

Moderates don't think Republicans are evil. They may not always agree with them, and some may even have a caricatured view. But a former President behaving how Carter behaves will generally be off putting to the middle even as it fires up the base. And in this election moderate votes are crucial to Obama.

Jimmy Carter is an elder statesman and a past Democratic President. I would hope someone who served would not be cast aside as unworthy to speak if he is willing. On the other had the GOP will probably not want G W to make a speech.

What's a couple of months between November '80 and January '81? He still officially lost the election to Raygun in 1980.

I know the facts don't matter to you but they matter to me.

Ronald Reagan scored a triumph on the day of his inauguration. The Iranian mullahs knew who they were dealing with.

But you go ahead and hate him. Adds to the case in Reagan's favor.

LOL!! Reagan had his henchmen hold those hostages until he was sworn in. Those hostages know until this day Reagan was a fraud and was the reason they were held longer than they had to be. Reagan was a corrupt crook!
