Japanese Researchers Develop Speech Jammer: Sweet or Scary?

Keeping a boisterous crowd under control might become a little bit easier in the future. Perhaps... too easy. Japanese researchers Kazutaka Kurihara and Koji Tsukada have reportedly developed a "gun" that effectively silences anyone it "shoots." Early prototypes of the SpeechJammer required the gun to be hooked up to a computer, but rumor has it that they've already developed a handheld version of the device.

The way it's supposed to work is a little bit complicated. An abstract about the project found on the Cornell University Library website explains, "In general, human speech is jammed by giving back to the speakers their own utterances at a delay of a few hundred milliseconds. This effect can disturb people without any physical discomfort, and disappears immediately by stop speaking. Furthermore, this effect does not involve anyone but the speaker ... " Sounds a little complicated, but the video will help smooth things out. Plus, it's kind of funny. Do you think a speech jammer is a pretty sweet idea, or is it slightly too strange for your taste?

It's like when you enable listening to your microphone. Everything you say gets repeated back a fraction of a second later, which is confusing as hell. So you'd stop talking.

It's not really scary at all...

Not like what someone has to say, jam them . That is beyond sick . With that being said I don't think it would work on my girlfriend. When she starts yelling at me I don't think she can hear anything .

very simply feeds back your own voice a millisecond and hearing what you are saying twice is confusing so you stop talking.

Wow, a nice way to interrupt somebody in a foreign court without giving them their rights or freedom of speech. Reminds me of the movie Red Corner with Richard Gere. His character is accused of murder while in China. When he is granted permission to speak his automated translator would deactivate because someone always pulled the plug on him. Now imagine being accused in a foreign court when you're in fact innocent, and the prosecution is waving that Speech Jammer in your face.

Well, the girl is pretty . . . But that is about the ONLY SWEET THING about seeing someone speaking a language in which you have no idea what they are saying.

If it only worked on people who are lying, it would be a great tool. How many politicians would get silenced?????

Politicians sadly I believe are immune due to simple fact they're used to hearing their voice echoed over the loud speakers anyway.

Even if I don't agree with someone or if someone is being irritating or annoying (ie Kardashians or Jersey Shore) I wouldn't do it. We reserve our right to our Freedom of Speech.

I see where this could lead. Silencing the masses is taking away their right to free speech; leading to some form of government control. wrong and wrong. How dare you intervene your will on another persons person?! that's like raping them.
