Japanese Auto Sales Plummet: Is This Good for the American Auto Industry?

As horrible as it is to imagine the devastation that has led to a 51 percent decrease in Japanese auto sales this month, this could be good news for American automakers. Next to China and the European Union, Japan's auto industry has the highest vehicle output in the world, beating out U.S. production by about 2 million vehicles per year.

The earthquake- and tsunami-prompted parts shortage squeezed production and dealers’ supplies; just 108,824 vehicles sold last month. Toyota was the hardest-hit, with sales sinking 68.7% to 35,557; Nissan saw a 37.2% drop to 17,413 vehicles, and Honda sales fell 48.5% to 18,923, the Wall Street Journal reports.

According to Newser, Honda and Toyota expect to be running at full capacity again by the end of 2011.
