The difference in America and Japan , is America has the mind set that we can , and in the face of problems , Americanz will rise and repair , fix and mend the problem and carry on . Japan can try and copy what America does , but has no ability or will to go in and fix , mend and repair something when it goes wrong , Japans answer to the problem is just shut it down and walk off.

Japan has bigger problems to worry about. The faulty GE plants have polluted the hell out of Tokyo and other areas of Japan. http://www.sodahead.com/unite...
The disaster is worse than Japan.

Also, The blame should be placed on TEPCO (which was contracted under Obama to build power plants here), and the Japanese government that let them slide on safety regulations.

Now, for specifically whether they should use nuclear power? At this point, they should shut down the plants, and have them all reinspected before being turned back on, if at all. Some need to be permanently decommissioned because of their location and/or inability to handle earthquakes. I know people would be without power, but do you want to risk adding any more radiation into the environment? Japan is lucky that their plants didnt crumble to peaces before Fukushima was hit and melted down.

Apparenlty, they're not able to manage it. The ground's too shaky, and they don't have the proper safety measures in place.

I agree SP , but the citizens of japan have quite an investment in this form of energy. According to a March 14, 2011 article by CNN , Japan has over 50 working reactors and those reactors provide about 35% of all of Japans energy. They did have quite a tragedy with the 4 reactors that were built without regards to their position to be swamped and disabled by a tsunami , but that is what it historically now is, all you can do is learn your lessons and make progress as you can to secure and clean up the mess and never rebuild so close to low ocean ground, move that reactor a few miles back inland and we would not be reading about the reactors today . The tsunami and the destruction it did to the population living along the Japan coast and the trash washing up in northern western United States would be the story we remember. seems like a hard headed waste to abandon 46 other very expensive working reactors and throw the financial load on the helpless taxpayers of Japan .

I agree... IF they can hash it out with the other reactors better than they have to this point, more power to them (heh, heh). However, they have a responsibility to the rest of the world, too-- we don't even know how much this mess is going to cost US here yet... or how the ecosystem will be affected. I like to believe they'll be more forthcoming than the Russians, and definitely more responsible. It's just been a bad time for Japan lately, and we certainly don't want to see their markets/economy collapse.

Can you imagine being a Japanese tax payer and what you have been taxed over the last 40+ years for and seeing the Government just flip the switch on your energy system. Oh well mr Japanese citizen dont worry , we sell you new throw away system at twice the tax.

I think they have bigger problems to try and fix.
