LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The right wing is going to love this: Jane Fonda, whose outspoken opposition to the Vietnam War continues to enrage conservatives, will play former first lady Nancy Reagan in Lee Daniels' "The Butler."

"The Butler" is a sprawling historical drama that centers on Eugene Allen, a black man who worked as butler in the White House under eight presidents.

Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland") is slated to play Allen. Oprah Winfrey, Hugh Jackman and Liam Neeson are among the other big names who are circling roles in the project.

Daniels earned an Oscar nomination for directing "Precious" and is currently directing "The Paperboy" with Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron.

Fonda's performance
would be a supporting one, because the film spans decades, chronicling
Allen's years in the White House from 1952 all the way up to 1986, when
the Reagans inhabited the White House.

Fonda is a great actress and I don't care about her politics. It's funny that she will protray Nancy, though.

She is a good actress, I think she will do a great job. However, I wonder at their choice, because she is not well loved or respected by the right, due to her stance during the Vietnam War. It seems they would get a bigger audience had they not chosen her for the role.

The irony is dripping off Fonda's role as the wife of the messiah of the Repub party. Wait for it, they'll be protesting in front of theaters nationwide. Hanoi Nancy Reagan!!

The actual actions of Ms Fonda are greatly exaggerated, during her opposition to the Vietnam war. She was pretty young, and has apologized and expressed regret for some of them, excluding those she didn't actually do, as she should have.
I'm not a particular fan of Fonda or Nancy Reagan, but Fonda is a pretty good actress, slightly resembles Nancy Reagan, so why not.

How can one possibly exaggerate this -

    Jane fonda vietnam photos

    or this -

When American POWs finally began to return home (some of them having been held captive for up to nine years) and describe the tortures they had endured at the hands of the North Vietnamese, Jane Fonda quickly told the country that they should "not hail the POWs as heroes, because they are hypocrites and liars." Fonda said the idea that the POWs she had met in Vietnam had been tortured was "laughable," claiming: "These were not men who had been tortured. These were not men who had been starved. These were not men who had been brainwashed." The POWs who said they had been tortured were "exaggerating, probably for their own self-interest," she asserted. She told audiences that "Never in the history of the United States have POWs come home looking like football players. These football players are no more heroes than Custer was. They're military careerists and professional killers" who are "trying to make themselves look self-righteous, but they are war criminals according to law."

You can't; I should have said SOME of her actions. I do not at all agree with the way Fonda expressed her opposition the war, and some of the things she said and did were despicable, no doubt.

A traitor to her country is going to play Nancy Reagan on the silver screen?

Ronald must be rolling over in his grave on this one. :(

He has been rolling in his grave a lot longer then that. I remember on his death bed he told his son I really thought they were going to do what they said. referring to him giving tax breaks to corporation in return for creating more jobs. Oh well! RIP Ronnie

Maybe you're not old enough to remember Reagans famous "Well, There you go again" statement. He said it during a presidential debate or some such thing, and his fans thought it was just the smartest thing ever.

Hanoi Jane playing Nancy Reagan... Now ain't that a bit of a stretch, even for Hollywood. Wonder who and how someone or somebodies came up with that idea, and what they were smoking when they did.

I don't care who plays the role other than objecting to a traitorous bitch playing the role of a great American first lady. Yes, I am conservative and yes this does upset me. I suppose those on the left admire Jane?

    Excellant question!

Now, if only we could get Liberals/Democrats to respond to it.
