James Madison Quote

Leasheryn/Lady Willpower 2012/07/14 00:47:35

"The advice nearest to my heart and deepest in my convictions is that the Union of the States be cherished and perpetuated. Let the open enemy to it be regarded as a Pandora with her box opened; and the disguised one, as the Serpent creeping with his deadly wiles into Paradise."

These eloquent words, from this 18th Century sage and patriot, contrast sharply with the degraded state of the English language in post-literate, technology-obsessed 21st Century America.

I agree. Those men were brilliant and they knew that we would screw things up.

They knew humans would screw things up. At the end of the Constitutional Convention, it is said a woman asked Benjamin Franklin what kind of government the Constitution would establish and he replied "A republic if you can keep it."

Reading the Federalist Papers you become aware the founders understood both the risks and rewards of the government they were creating. These papers provide wonderful guidance for future generations. Unfortunately too many on the right and the left are prepared to listen to drug addicts and recovering addicts who have never taken the time to read these documents before claiming to speak for the founders.

Really? Why is the form of government they established referred to as a "liberal democracy"?

It's not; it's a Federal Republic. As Ben franklin was leaving the Constitutional Convention a woman approached him and ask: "What kind of government do we have, a democracy? " Franklin replied "No, a republic, if you can keep it" Also, Franklin refereed to democracy as two wolves and a lamb deciding what's for lunch. Jefferson called democracy a "mobocracy" because it's mob rule and not the rule of law.

Really....perhaps you should have looked up the definition of a Liberal Democracy before responding. Since you could not trouble yourself to do so, I did a web query on liberal democracy. Remember there are only two types of people who make up their own definitions words and phrases; despot partisan leaders, described in Huxley's 1984, and fools described in Cervantes' Don Quixote. So are you the emergence of a new class of despot or a fool?

If the founding fathers were not Liberals why does Condoleeza Rice call them liberals? If America is not a liberal democracy why does she use America as an example of liberal democracy? Here is a section of the speech I am referencing: :

    "....
So this afternoon, I want to talk about an idea -- an idea that has defined the modern era since the dawn of the Enlightenment, an idea that has now captured the imagination of a majority of humanity, and made our world more secure as a result, so that idea is liberal democracy. ..... The ideas of Liberalism were, of course, later refined and applied and written into the American Constitution by men like Hamilton, and Jefferson and Madison. ...." Here is the definition of liberal democracy from other sources:

"A liberal democracy is a form of representative democracy in which elected representatives who hold power are limited by a constitution ....." source: WiseGeek Clear Answers for Common Questions

"Liberal democracy is a form of representative democracy where elected representatives that hold the decision power are moderated by a constitution that emphasizes protecting individual liberties and the rights of minorities in society,.....Such constitutional rights (also named liberal rights) are guaranteed through various controlled institutions and various statutory laws....." source: WordIQ.com

"Liberal democracy is a form of government in which representative democracy operates under the principles of liberalism. It is characterized by fair, free, and competitive elections between multiple distinct political parties, the rule of law in everyday life as part of an open society, a separation of powers into different branches of government, and the protection of human rights and civil liberties for all persons. ....A liberal democracy may take various constitutional forms: it may be a constitutional republic, such as France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, or the United States ..." source: Wikipedia

I strongly encourage you to read The Federalist # 9. When you understand that paper, perhaps you will understand why you are acting as one of the "snakes" Madison was warning us about.

Why do you insist on proving that it is YOU who do NOT understand the Federalist Papers?
  • Ken Leasher... 2012/07/16 02:01:45
    Ken
Really....exactly what are "factions"? How do these "factions" relate to the present political debate? How do you think James Madison and Alexander Hamilton would have evaluated Rush Limbaughs statements in 2009 about his hopes for Obama's failure?

There is certainly considerable wisdom in the Federalist Papers and I cannot claim to understand them completely .... but gist of the discussion on factions and how they can destroy our democracy is pretty direct. Alexander Hamilton and James Madison make it quite clear that anyone who is more concerned with their faction winning than the success of America is a traitor to democracy.
  • Ken Rodney 2012/07/14 15:12:27
    Ken
Just to be a little clearer....when Rush Limbaugh suggested he hoped the President would fail, he opened the pandora's box that Madison referenced. The Federalist #9 describes that pandora's box, the associated threat to America, and why we should seek to avoid political factions. When you make factional statements, you are perpetuating the evil.
