Reading the Federalist Papers you become aware the founders understood both the risks and rewards of the government they were creating. These papers provide wonderful guidance for future generations. Unfortunately too many on the right and the left are prepared to listen to drug addicts and recovering addicts who have never taken the time to read these documents before claiming to speak for the founders.
If the founding fathers were not Liberals why does Condoleeza Rice call them liberals? If America is not a liberal democracy why does she use America as an example of liberal democracy? Here is a section of the speech I am referencing: :

So this afternoon, I want to talk about an idea -- an idea that has defined the modern era since the dawn of the Enlightenment, an idea that has now captured the imagination of a majority of humanity, and made our world more secure as a result, so that idea is liberal democracy. ..... There is certainly considerable wisdom in the Federalist Papers and I cannot claim to understand them completely .... but gist of the discussion on factions and how they can destroy our democracy is pretty direct. Alexander Hamilton and James Madison make it quite clear that anyone who is more concerned with their faction winning than the success of America is a traitor to democracy.
