DETROIT — A lawyer and friend of Jack Kevorkian says the assisted
suicide advocate has died at a Detroit-area hospital at the age of 83.

Kevorkian had been hospitalized since last month with pneumonia and kidney problems.

Morganroth
says Kevorkian was conscious Thursday night and the two spoke about
leaving the hospital and getting ready for rehabilitation.

Kevorkian
was released from a Michigan prison in 2007 after serving eight years
for second-degree murder. He claims to have assisted in at least 130
suicides.

He was a bit of a nut, but history will remember him as a hero from the frontier of moral discourse. As sentient beings, we have the capacity to plan and manage our own existence to minimize suffering. Iron age myths cannot do that, and when we rely on them to inform our lives, we waste our minds and devolve into animalism.

Should be more choices. I think neither. He is a man, who was a physician and may have thought he was helping those with the help they felt they needed. Nothing more, nothing less.

choices physician helping felt just a man

He only facilitated the wishes of his clients. If he hadn't done it, they would have sought an alternative means. I wouldn't call him a "hero" per se, but he was certainly no "villain". He was only a vehicle.

He's a hero, and history will judge him as so...

I'm proud of the fact that in 1994 my state, Oregon, was the first state in the country to legalize physician assisted dying. (Oregon Death with Dignity Act)

And you don't have to pump your own gas... Not even allowed, And then there is the lithium water fountain in Ashland, calms all the tourists down for the Shakespeare fest.

LOL Yeah the not pumping your own gas is so lame... I think they found chromium in the water here, but I don't drink the tap water. I don't live to far from Ashland...

huh, I just looked up Lithia Park and Lithia water on wiki, and they said "communities with lithia waters have lower suicide rates, mental hospital admissions, incidences of crimes, and arrests related to drug addictions." Sounds pretty calming!

Maybe it's just Ashland is calming... or maybe that's why Ashland is so mellow.

And If I was suffering for years with something like bone cancer or my child or dog.... Yes, I would first and foremost rather them not suffer in agony, just to keep them around waiting for some fantastical character to do it.

Apparently God can do nothing when it comes to ending (actual) suffering or pain... maybe if you believe hard enough you can feel less guilty about all the bad crap you've done in your life... But when it comes to pain, a doctor is a hundred times better than any god.

Had it been left to God, Kevorkian may likely not have been needed. In many cases it is the doctor whose vow to keep hearts beating despite quality of life that creates the situation in the first place.
