Actually, New York only gets 79 cents back for every dollar it sends to the Federal government, and California only gets 78 cents back.

The dark red and blue states on the map below received $1 more of federal tax money back than every dollar they contributed.

All of these petitions are a silly waste of time. Secession is unconstitutional, and even if it weren't, it wouldn't be up to the President to let them go or not anyway. Similarly I don't believe a President has the authority to strip an American citizen of their citizenship. And in any event, even if he or Congress wanted to do so, it would be a violation of the First Amendment rights of those petitioning to secede. The First Amendment does protect a person's right to say something stupid if they choose to.

I think the Republicans need to get over the fact that they lost the election, and the Democrats need to stop trying to gloat, and BOTH SIDES need to get back to actually working towards resolving the issues that face the nation, like the looming "fiscal cliff". It's a little too early for the 2016 Presidential campaign to begin, isn't it?
