Is Women-Only City in Saudi Arabia Revolutionary or Regressive?

We're not sure whether to file this under "revolutionary" or "regressive." A new town will be built in Saudi Arabia that is just reserved for women... and the reason behind it is so women can be encouraged to pursue careers without breaking the country's strict Islamic laws. As of now, only 15 percent of women in the Islamic nation work.

The controversial city is expected to have companies and firms run by women, produce about 5,000 jobs in industries like pharmaceutics and food processing and lure in millions of dollars in investments. Do you think the idea behind this upcoming women-only city is revolutionary... or is it kind of regressive?

While people say it is revolutionary, let is think about it: a city only for women. Pretend this was only for men. Is it really revolutionary? No I say this is discrminating to men, this doesn't improve their standing relating to men. This makes women unequal to men. It Only makes the gap between each greater.

The men are going to be sorry because these ladies are going to find out that they can be very happy and self sufficient in their "lesbian" environment! And while I'm straight as an arrow, I wouldn't blame these women at all!

lol.....I have to add this; When I scrolled down and saw the burka clad ladies, it reminded me of being at a restaurant in Cairo and seated right across from me was a man and woman, woman was facing me, and she had that get-up on and she ate with it covering her face. I kid you not, she went somewhere down by her lap and put the fork behind the black head thing and brought the food up to her mouth. And all because some 'other' man might have seen her face if she wasn't veiled and either she or he would have thrown each other down and had sex right there in the restaurant!!

Those men sound terribly insecure to have to hide their "property" because some other man might covet it.

Well, that was my question. How will conjugal visits work? Or, will these women find out that they really don't need these male masters? Good response to Steveth too!

They'll just have to don their 'gay' apparel and hit the road. But that's not really a problem because their male minders can enter a temporary marriage any time they want. Doesn't matter if the little lady is there or not. Oh, and they also dip into the same-sex pool but no one ever talks about this.....Like Ahmadinejad said, there are no homosexuals in Iran and I guess that goes for all Islamic nations!

It is my understanding that they use male boys until a certain age and then aren't allowed to do them anymore. Sick, sick, sick.

The fact that women are becoming equal or quite possibly surpassing men in the corporate world. Also, they may not like the idea of gender segregation, while I agree (like with affirmative action) that it should not have come to THIS point...it is indeed still necessary unfortunately. We must be biased towards the underprivileged now in order to level the plane. *the way I see it*

At least in theory. Who knows if it will end up working out as such or if it will turn into a place to throw undesired women. With any luck women will start gaining enough influence that they will push trough the archaic religious barriers.

I was curious if they could remove their burka's and face coverings since there would be no men around. And if they can do that, then they can drive too. But I don't know. I'm sure they ladies have already asked.

Do you remember when there was a fire at an Islamic school and the girls inside died because they wouldn't allow them to come out without their heads covered? These people aren't exactly what you would call logical.

You suggest they are interested and driven by sex in starting this experimental group and I don't think it occurs to them. They need to learn to work and compete in a male dominated world as this countries people have never seen. They have much to learn and no time to learn it. As soon as the US is tired of our friendship it will be over. The only reason the population doesn't revolt is because the Brotherhood will sweep in and they do not want that level of ugly control. Already I read of dissent within the working class.

louisa, I am in a so cal heat wave and I had a nice paragraph ready when my lights dimmed, air conditioner groaned and my comment went into cyberspace! I was having fun. What is it we were talking about, or if you wish you chose a subject: maybe 911?

I hate it when that happens!!! I'm against this, but I'm going to not talk about sex for a minute......I was reading that you were going to have blackouts. What a bummer. Couple of week ago we were out for five days. Miserable! So I understand your frustration. Aren't you having fires too?

OK......911. I don't believe in conspiracies but I have a feeling you do!

So when the government kills its own people it is a conspiracy? 911 got them the Patriot Act! The patriot Act our new Constitution. Which got Ilbombya the ability to send drones into residential neighborhoods and kill innocent children and women. I accept the media explanation of John Kennedy's death. I have never been a conspiracy guy. The next president will be our first dictator. Long live Big Brother!

The next president will be our first dictator? The next one? Not obama?

I don't doubt that there have been conspiracies. But the addicts have a conspiracy for everything that's ever happened!

Why did obama extend the Patriot Act? He could have dropped it cold.

So you believe Ilbombya is the dictator? May well be. Although things are destined to get plenty worse next term. They seem to gather tools and pass them along, each building since Bush, whom I assume is drinking his sorry ass to death. We maybe be better off if Ilbombya wins. We know the worse he has done but there's no telling about corporate raider Romney. lbombya's 'State Capitalism' is bad enough but Romney's smarter and greedier and more ambitious.

I reluctantly gave you a rave, but it's just for your typing skills.

Had obama been elected two hundred years ago, he would have been hung for treason within weeks of taking office. Does that mean that Romney is a good replacement? No. Just the better of two overly ambitious greedy politicians.

I don't see how things can get any worse than they are right now. But the good thing is that Romney knows how to make money and how to keep it. He also respects it! Obama thinks when he moves money around with the stroke of his pen that it's an imaginary transaction; no money involved.
