Is Whitening Clouds the New Way to Go Green?

The failed Copenhagen climate change talks have prompted some wealthy donors to back their own proposals to stop global warming like "whitening" clouds.

Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates gave $300,000 to a geoengineering firm to develop machines that would take seawater and spray it upwards into the clouds. This would supposedly create vast banks of white clouds to reflect the Sun's rays away from Earth.

Even noted climate change skeptic Bjørn Lomborg says that more money needs to be allocated to back plans like this to slow down and possibly reverse global warming. Most of the plans are being done without government backing, which obviously has brought criticism.

While Gates and others certainly have a right to spend their money any way they want, should they be held liable for any unintended consequences of these geoengineering attempts?

Should We 'Whiten' Clouds to Save the Environment?

I have a much better idea. Why don't all those who think man is creating global warming simply stop creating man-made CO2? Seriously, just stop creating it already.......stop driving your car, stop all forms of transportation, disconnect your electricity at your house, disconnect the water, your phone, stop buying groceries, and then just stop breathing altogether. Problem solved! Actually, this solves a whole multitude of problems.

If it's safe, then yes. If there are indeed repercussions in the future then those responsible for initially spraying the water and their financial benefactors should be held liable. However, it's very unlikely that any harm could come from whitening clouds by the process mentioned here, for it involves nothing more than spraying ocean water into the sky. If it were a different process then of course the safety would again have to be reviewed before putting it into effect, but this is a rather simple process from which the only feasibly undesirable results would come from the energy harnessed to get the water from sea level to the sky.
Regardless of whether it helps or not as long as it is not dangerous, then the government should have no say in the matter.

Algae Bio - Diesel is a much better solution to Global Warming It is fed on concentrated levels of CO2, water and sunlight and 50% of body weight is oil as compared to palm oil which yields only 20% .It produces Bio-diesel from the oil content and the carbohydrate content can be converted to ethanol.Algae is expected tpo produce 10,000 gallons per acre per year. No other resource comes close in magnitude for producing carbon neutral fuel.

Gate has lost it. Spraying sea water in the air results in more particulate pollution of every mineral that's in sea water. Think of the salt that would be blowing in the wind covering the country where we are growing our food, etc. Gates can't even produce a software program that isn't prone to crash. Why would this be any different?

"Gates can't even produce a software program that isn't prone to crash."

For the most part true. I do have to admit that I had very little problems with dos 5.x - 6.x. Also Windows 98se and XP gave me few problems. Currently using Windows 7 on one of my lap-tops. So far had a headache with the wireless networking when I first got it, but after connecting with cat5 and download a program from manufacturer it works fine. Too early for thumbs up or down.

This is stupid and dangerous! Reflecting heat from the earth will only create an Ice Age sooner! Look we are only in a relative warming period between Ice Ages. If we reflect even a small portion of the sunlight that could tip us back into the Ice Age especially when the output of the sun fluctuates!

Clouds are not mirrors. The top surfaces of clouds are white and solar radiation is mostly absorbed by the water vapor and some of the solar radiation is relected into the upper atmosphere but the majority of the heat penetrates the cloud layers and is then trapped between the surface of the earth and the bottoms of the clouds. Cloudy nights are warmer than clear nights because the heat is unable to escape into the upper atmosphere. On the cloudiest of days the ambient temperature still increases from morning lows.
  • Theresa askmike September 01, 2010 19:13:12
    Theresa
Upper atmosphere clouds do reflect sunlight! Why else would our eyes precieve them as white? You are saying the lower atmosphere clouds would trap the heat like Venus being totally surrounded with thick clouds Which is the total opposite of what they are suggesting.

Most of the solar radiation is absorbed by the water vapor and a small percentage of the solar radiation is reflected back into the upper atmosphere.
  • Theresa askmike September 01, 2010 20:20:57
    Theresa
That is true of clouds in the lower atmosphere only! The upper clouds do reflect sunlight back into space. The difference is that clouds in the lower atmosphere are denser thus can absorb more heat than they reflect. The upper clouds are not very dense therefore they reflect more heat than they absorb. The project of whitening clouds sounds like they will be producing clouds in the lower atmosphere only. Thus having defeated the so called purpose of lowering the amount of heat trapped toward the earth.

If you shined a beam of light at a mirror the mirror will prevent any light from penetrating the mirror and the area behind the mirror will not be luminated at all. If the clouds reflect all of the solar radiation as you claim, you would not "perceive them as white" but you would see a blackness such as occurs during an ecclipse. The fact that you report seeing white is a tacit admission that the clouds absorb most of the solar radiation and reflect a portion of the solar radiation into the upper atmosphere. Clouds consist of water vapor and that is true whether the clouds are at ground level or at the upper atmosphere and water vapor is not capable of acting like a mirror.
  • Theresa askmike September 03, 2010 06:07:33
    Theresa
It is obvious you have no concept of Optics! Transmission of light is not the same as absorbtion of light! When you perceive the color white all wavelengths have to be present. Therefore the object absorbed none of the wavelengths! If it absorbs a wavelength the rest of the wave lengths would be reflected. If it absorbs all the wavelengths no color would be reflected and it would appear black!!

Whitening the skies? Sure. The top surfaces of clouds are already as white as they will ever be. Take an airplane ride and take a look at the clouds below you. They are white. And now that hurricane season is upon us, take a look at the satellite images of the hurricanes as they form and tell us what color you see. White.

I'm in favor of this sort of thing, and in fact favor it more than government intervention. However, as someone else has already mentioned in this thread, you always have to keep in mind the "Law" of Unintended Consequences.

Personally I think if warming is occurring then we're going to see more clouds as a natural consequence anyway, which, what do you know, will mitigate the effects of any warming! Not to mention the formation of carbonic acid, when water and carbon dioxide mix, is one of the better natural ways of "scrubbing" carbon dioxide out of the air. So let them spend their money this way if they want. It might help and even if it doesn't we might learn something that's actually useful in spite of ourselves.

All that's gonna do is make torrential rains somewhere. It's not going to solve the problems which are adaptation like moving inland to a higher elevation, and reducing pollution which has far greater consequences than the miniscule contributions to warming.

It might work but there are big problems - for one thing, it gives people an excuse to keep on burning fossil fuels, instead of phasing them out rapidly. It won't help the ocean acidification problem (from excessive absorption of atmospheric CO2). Where will the energy come from to run such a system - from burning more fossil fuels and thus making a bigger problem to solve? Also what happens if the scheme runs out of funding or grinds to a halt for some other reason? We'd very quickly return to massive global warming on an even larger scale because of the accumulated CO2 in the atmosphere.

All in all, something like this might be necessary but *only* in addition to eliminating fossil fuels, not instead of it.

The machines would probably create more CO2 than they save. Also, water vapor is a greenhouse gas.
Anyway, if we are responsible for global warming, then we are only responsible for a small fraction of the CO2 in the atmosphere. The biggest way we impact the climate is the deforestation of the rain forest.

Hold on a second. The oceans are the major source of the clouds that circle the globe and the sun has been producing clouds since Earth was formed. If the clouds that are formed over the oceans do not currently fall on inland areas, if you make more clouds over the oceans how do you propose to haul those clouds to areas that do not already have "sufficient" rain? Do you not suppose that the clouds will go where the clouds have gone for eons, and that the areas that have historically received rain will simply receive more rain? "Simple technology" indeed.

NASA already does this when they test rockets.

I watched the series "SPEED" on the BBC which was presented by the "top Gear" presenter Jeremy Clarkson.

During one episode, he visited a NASA rocket testing base (Stennis Space Center - I believe) where they "make their own weather" due to the testing of the rockets.

This was due to the rocket fuel propellants - Liquid hydrogen & liquid oxygen, in layman terms they make water vapor - i.e. Clouds!

propellants liquid hydrogen liquid oxygen layman terms water vapor h2o

Moments after the rockets are tested, it begins to rain from the "man made" clouds.

Look it up on Youtube, I know it's there, but I can't add due to URL filter restrictions on my company laptop.

    100% Eco Friendly fuel!

If they can do it, why not?

Global warming requires much more study. Certainly we shouldn't do anything in haste. Even if this technique is effective in producing the desired result, how would it make money? The only way would be to sell it to government, another raping of the middles class taxpayers just like carbon trading.
