Is war really necessary?

Many people say that war is bad but required in society, but is it really? It is quite possible for countries to settle their disputes with each other by means that do not include violence, such as simply arguing with various leaders or other kinds of contests (that do not include killing others!).
War is not necessary, it is just something we got used to after a long time, and it is possible to have a world without violent war. No, that doesn't mean that everyone has to agree, but they should settle their disagreements in a non-violent way. It doesn't seem like this is going to happen for a while, though, unfortunately, with the way nations are acting.

Mary, I don't believe it is the people of the countries that are acting to have wars, but the professional politicians who don't have to do the fighting and find ways for their own children not to have to do so either. I think there could be other means to settle disputes, but it's never going to happen as long as there is so much hatred in the world.

Particularly for the U.S. because It has no need to try to obtain the resources of other lands (other than for pure greed) because it has an over abundance of natural resources on it's lands. The U.S. is geographically insulated from invading forces from foreign powers so there really is no reason why the U.S. should have to engage in war

Defensive war is the only necessary war. But if we don't make other countries mad, we will less likely end up in war.

The Industrial Revolution has created a necessity for war. Prior to mechanization, population growth was very slow; farming for food was the biggest industry. After mankind learned to feed thousands with minimal resources, population growth has grown exponentially. The combination of too many people and fewer resources is a recipe for war. On top of that, climate change will expedite the problem.

It would have been impossible to stop Hitler without going to war. People tried it. More recently, people had to fight to stop Milosevic, the last dictator in Europe. However, in the Vietnam war, a lot of people were killed for nothing. The First World War also didn't acheive anything except for the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, but it also led to the rise of fascism in Europe which was very much worse. Of course, war isn't always right but is sometimes necessary. I think that it is harder to be sure what has been right or wrong during the last ten years. I also think that people should always try to avoid targeting civilians. It looks likely that the next war may be with Iran, which is also under a dictatorship. If people could stop dicatatorships, then maybe they could stop war.

Is stupidity necessary? No, but it seems to promulgate itself anyway. This question is a classic example.

Let's outlaw war! We'd still have black slavery..if America even survived. More likely than the survival of any free society, the world would be groaning under the tyranny of one of two progressive ideologies, Naziism or communism.

I never said that it could work out in real life, just like communism it is possible and could make a very nice world, it would be nearly impossible but could work if we all cooperated. But, sadly, that is unrealistic, especially in these of modern time. I hope that at least war will only be used when absolutely needed. (sorry If English isn't good)

    Lydecho,
A lot of things 'could work out' but in practice, with real human beings, they unfortunately don't. I live in a place in America where there was an actual experiment with religiously based communism (in it's real sense, the common sharing of all goods and crops) was actually tried. It worked for awhile, but ultimately failed. Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" tells us why.

War is unfortunately a necessary endeavor, also because of human nature. There are few nations that was not formed and settled with one hand on the plow and the other on the rifle, and even the few that were had their freedom guaranteed by one that was.

BTW, your English is just fine. Where are you from?

Naziism was a Fascist Dictatorship (i.e. Republican) & Russian & Chinese so called Communism also Dictatorships! Communism is hard to do even on small scales i.e. Communes! & just how Communist are you going to be will their be personnel property my yogurt car has more chance of working then no personnel property! In a Republic will there be individual rights & protection from the state. all government has degrees of absolute!

Actually, Nazisim was a socialist state Rockne. Nazi is the German diminutive for the German equivalent of National Socialist Democratic German Worker's Party (NSDAP).

In fact, the Nazis had a great deal in common with those policies that are today labeled 'progressive' :
