Is voting for Mitt out of fear of Obama winning the Christian thing to do?

It has been quiet common for the terms: anybody but Obama, if you don't vote for Mitt you are voting for Obama, not voting is a vote for Obama, ect; in order to try and force people to vote for Mitt Romney instead of voting for third party or not voting at all.

What this comes down to, is that anyone that falls for these type of arguments are voting for Mitt Romney out of fear for Obama winning. This is what I termed a fear vote. So the question is: is voting out of fear the Christian thing to do.

Well in order to answer that question we must look at some bible versus.

2 Timothy 1:7
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

Romans 8:15
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”

1 John 4:8
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fearinvolves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

So clearly one must not make decisions based on the fear of man, but we are suppose to based on the fear of God. So no it is not the Christian thing to do to vote for Mitt out of fear of Obama. If you are a Christian and are going to vote for Mitt Romney should not be voting for him because you fear Obama, but because he is a reasonable person to vote for biblically. Now if you can resolve that he is a biblically acceptable candidate you have plenty of reason to vote for Mitt. But those of you out there trying to get people to vote for Mitt by the methods mentioned above you are using unChristian like tactics.

Well it should drive us to pick someone else, that is clear. But the problem lies with the pick anyone else notion.

I realize that, but we do not have a lot of choices. I have a wild dream about the RNC finding a better candidate during the convention.

I have a dream of replacing the RNC with a real conservative party. But until we start convincing people to stop voting out of fear it won't happen.

I would like to see that as well. But that needs to start with the Congress who is supposed to hold the real power.

I agree that it is a better plan to heavily target Congress before we target the president, but I still can't in good conscience vote for someone who I think would be a bad president even if they are better than the other option.

This is a flawed premis! Fear is NOT the motivating factor. The love of our country is more of the reason.

A crackpot idea. Anything that portends to make it okay to vote for or indirectly support Obama is a lie, and THAT is an unChristian, unAbrahamic thing to do.

I voted against obama the last time around and will do again (if allowed) and my vote had nothing to do with fear or the color of his skin. His promises and policies were too good to be true in '08...unfortunately, I was right.

unfortunately I vote against Obama too because of his policies. But I have matured and matured in my beliefs since then and realize I should not be voting against anyone, but for someone. I again will not be voting for Obama, but I must vote for someone rather than against Obama.

Look, I wasn't all that thrilled with McCain but obama was nuts in my book. Now Romney is starting to grow on me whereas obama has proven time and again that our Constitution, the American people and the free-market system mean nothing to him!

My main point was, not to vote for Mitt because you are afraid of what will happen if Obama wins, but to vote for whoever even if it be Mitt because you think they are a good candidate. Ever since Ross Perot split the vote in 1992 this mantra about a vote for a third part is a vote for a so and so is based on the fear that the other candidate will trash our country. It is inherently unChristian to vote because of the fear of what a man can do, and I am setting out to get this point across.

The Christian thing to do is to pray about it.

Too bad we don't have the ancient Urim and Thummim, with which one could "inquire of the Lord."

Not quite sure how to answer that. If you are saying that because I should vote for Paul, well, Paul wasn't my first choice.
If I were going to vote just for a Christian, then I would write in Huckabee. He has always been my first choice.
  • Adam rightside 2012/06/12 18:23:05

The person you would be voting for doesn't even have to be christian or Paul, it could still be Mitt if you can resolve is biblically. The main point is all the rant about if you don't vote or if you vote for a third party it is a vote for Obama nonsense must stop. To say I must vote for Mitt in order to get Obama out is a fear vote, and we as Christians are not to be controlled by our fear of man.

You could look at it logically. First ask yourself, do I want Obama out of office? Or do I believe that if given another four years, will Obama cause irreversable damage to our country? If your answer is yes to either of these then you have to ask yourself another question. What can I do to stop this from happening?
  • Adam teigan 2012/06/13 02:28:54

Now that I have matured further in my understanding, I will never ever make my priority in voting to be to oust someone. My first priority is does this guy fit within the acceptable parameters of biblical doctrine. If at this point I have 2 or more choices, then maybe I will consider who is most likely to win.
  • teigan Adam 2012/06/13 04:40:20

If I can clearly see that the man in office is determined to destroy my country, then you damn well better believe that I want his ass out of office, (that is anger not fear talking). Because that is what is BEST for my country and the future of my children and grandchildren. If that is immature then so be it. I know what is right and wrong and it would be wrong, dead wrong to vote for someone so that I can "feel" good. I think that is selfish and shows careless disregard for my country and my family and even your family.

What is selfish would be to make a decision based solely on the good of me. If the decision is based on what we believe to be the good of others whether it is good for me or not it is not selfish.
