You aren't allowed to say negro (or ni**er), they blur it out on tv, yet people can say cracker and stuff without consequences. No I don't think that people should say nigger or anything I just was wondering what you thought. This is not ment to be a black vs. white or anything racist.

Being called a cracker would in no way offend me. Being called the n word is offensive because of the history behind the word.

Racism isn't just a one sided thing, to think it is, or by action or inaction, only helps perpetuate it.

What makes you think the term 'Cracker' is not a derogatory word? It is a very big insult to a White person, whether they know it or not.

I don't have a 'crave' and you need to learn how to use spell check. Is there no way you can have a difference of opinion and NOT insult anyone? The White people I know who aren't insulted by those terms don't know what they mean and that's the truth. I ask you a valid question. I wanted to know why you felt the way you did and you came back with insults, which tells me you have no reasonable answer.

One version of racism is taboo while another version is nearly sanctioned. I don't have a problem with the word cracker but I do have a problem with a Department of Justice that, by policy, only prosecutes cases of white on minority voter intimidation cases and not the inverse. BTW I hate the N word, would not use it and dislike it when others do.

It's the history behind the word cracker. However, it's not a direct insult to white people. A cracker is a nickname for the job of breaking the will of defiant slaves. Whips were the common form of discipline, especially back in those days. That's also where the term "cracking a whip" comes from...Whips make a cracking sound when they hit their targets.

It may not have always been a direct insult, but it is now. The first time I heard that term I thought the guy was calling the person a crackhead. I had no idea it was a racial slur until I heard it several more times after that and noticed it was only said to white people. It was later explained to me that it was like the white version of the "n" word. Its to be expected that there would be derogatory names for all groups, though.

The dictionary's definition does not mean that 'cracker' isn't used in a derogatory way. I've been called one before for no reason at all, but for trying to get on a bus in an predominately black neighborhood. This idiot even pulled the cord to stop the bus and ask why a "white cracker" was allowed on the bus. The bus driver looked at me, then shook his head at her, and threatened to throw her off if she kept pulling the cord. Thankfully, the driver wasn't a racist.
Please don't tell me that the use of the term "cracker" in a derogatory way is perfectly okay, and that I should not be bothered by it. I'm usually on your side, but I disagree with Maurice and your provision of the definitions provided by the dictionary. The term "cracker" is, indeed, a direct insult against white people.

The dictionary is incorrect. The term is used on northern, middle-class whites, as well.
What happened years ago was an atrocity that absolutely ticks me off, and I guarantee if I had lived then, I would not have condoned it, but rather fought against it. The fact that so many people cowardly ignored it bothers me as much as the people that actively participated in it.

That is not where the term 'Cracker' came from. It refers to the Scots-Irish settlers, some of them former bondsmen, that lived in the Southern States from the 18th century on. It spread to become a racial slur to any white person. Most Crackers didn't own slaves, so your explaination doesn't make sense.

The whole racism thing is a bunch of political BS that people with nothing better to do rant about. I had a professor in college tell me that you had to be a minority to be a victim of racism. Shows you how college F***s with your head. Biggest bunch of liberal wussies I have ever known. White americans are becoming the minority.
