Yes. A liberal is one who believes in freedom and taking care of the less fortunate. Not all democrats believe in this. A lot of democrats would have been republcians in the past but would flunk the republican purity test of today. you know. Thou shall not increast taxes. Thou shall not reduce military spending. Thou shall run people's lives.

Obama is very similar to Kennedy and also very similar to Nixon. (but with a more pleasant personality) I wish Obama was a progressive liberal. Liberals have better records.

Yes less so now than in the past but yes.
Just like there is a difference between Republican and The Religious Right. Again it's gotten pretty small lately but there is a difference.

Yes! There are liberal Republicans and a very few conservative Democrats! I don't think there are ANY leaders of the Democrat Party who are conservative, only grassroots members, who still hold out hope of reform! Republicans have both liberals (RINOS) and conservatives!

Of course there is, but many people on both sides tend to equate party with school of thought...

    Yes.

Liberals and conservatives are ideological viewpoints. They are motivated by their pet causes and opinions rather than power.

Democrats and Republicans are parties that tread around those ideological lines but are more concerned with attaining power and occasionally working withint the governmental system to achieve realistic goals (though the power is the lions share of the motivator).

There are problems with both sets. Obviously the party issue, as touched on, is power grabbing. The ideological problems involve failure to see the other side, understand or empathize - and in the end compromise. Ideologically driven people tend to demonize the other side.

yeah, this is confusing. The term 'liberal' in Europe is sort of diametrically opposed to what it means in the US I believe. In Europe a liberal is someone who believes in free market principles...at least that's what I think.

exactly it's like the classical (or whatever) definition of a liberal is someone who advocates capitalism and free market principles. I wonder when we here in the US started using the word liberal in a different way.

Yes, I am a regestered Democrat and less liberal in some areas and more in others. I am consertive in some areas as well, but can not abide right or left wing nut jobs.
