Is the war in Iraq really over?

Maybe the war in Iraq is over, but we're still in Afganistan and we're still sending more troops there. Are we taking the soliders out of Iraq and sending them to Afganistan? Has anything really changed?

I doubt that it is over; I certainly hope it is. I'm not convinced that the U.S. gets it right often enough when it comes to foreign affairs. I'm not a Ron Paul fan, but his ideas about keeping our foreign involvement to a minimum are worth considering.

I hope so, if that country implodes by all means let it. We should not be the policemen of the world when we can not even fix anything at home.

There are a lot of troops coming home and that's a wonderful thing. We had no business being in Iraq in the first place. We can only hope and pray that soon our troops will be out of Afghanistan as well.

They are going to flood in there like illegals in America. And America says there is no way to remove the illegals in our own country so how in the hell would they ever expect to remove the diaper heads 10,000 miles away, or whatever the distance is.

I believe the real war for Iraq is about to begin, as soon as the US leaves.

Now don't go getting all twisted, what we did was real, as far too many American lives were lost. But I honestly don't think all that much was accomplished as we will soon see. Why do you think obama recently gave a stern warning to others (Iran) about our departing. Iran is chomping at the bit to move in and they will.

I truly believe that the war in Afghanistan is useless for us. They need to make up their minds if they want to change anything about their government or their country, because to date, I do not see much progress in it. Russians tried do change things there in the 1980s, and look where it got them?

They are. It isn't pleasant for the soldiers, but that is kind of their function, to fight wars. I would much rather we became focused on the War in Afghanistan so that we can win. Otherwise, I would hate to know that so many American Soldiers died in Afghanistan for nothing.

One of the major problems is defining "win." What would you say would have to happen in Afghanistan for us to "win?"

I know and I do, too, but we talk of winning and so far, no one has been able to give me what I consider an adequate definition of "win." The criteria that I would use to define a win is not going to happen in my lifetime. I don't see any of the Middle East becoming democracies and adopting equal rights for women.

I have my doubts about that. Al Malaki is far from a strong President and I think the more extreme Islamist factions will rear their ugly heads as soon as we're out of there and things will not be much different than they used to be. I hope I'm wrong, but Iraq has stronger cultural ties to the ways of the Middle East than it does to the West.

Of course it does; I don't think these wars will have any lasting consequences, but we can win them for now. We have an unrealistic goal in these wars, but since we're there anyway, we should try to do our best win them.

Don't you think that if we have the unrealistic goal of trying to turn the Middle East into a democracy, when we send our boys and girls in to fight such a war, we are not giving them an even chance? When you say, "but since we're there anyway," it isn't as though we've been living there. We're only there because Bush thought it was a good idea to declare war on them to get even for 9/11. In truth, if he was going to send anyone anywhere, it should have been to Saudi Arabia where 17 of the 19 hijackers came from.

If we leave Afghanistan now, there will be another attack on U.S. soil. Right now they're even more motivated to fight us than before. For that reason, we are committed to fighting in Afghanistan until something changes. I think that we should fight Saudi Arabia, but we need to finish the wars we're already involved in first. In WWII, we didn't have a very good chance of defeating the most technologically advanced and efficient military, but we still did it because it was right. Otherwise American citizens would have been in danger. What is right, isn't always easy.

I agree that we should change tactics to leaving and striking whenever they build up an attack force, but somehow that strategy is never utilized. I suspect that the government has our soldiers doing the patrols to test out the efficiency of the combat armor. I believe that's wrong, but at least it will save American lives later on. For the sake of the safety of the American people, we must stay in Afghanistan.

The most important comment you made was that we entered WWII and won was because it was the right thing to do and, because it was the right thing to do, we had no problem killing or bombing anything that moved until we broke the back of the Axis. The same cannot be said about Afghanistan because we went after a country that did not attack us - not them and not Iraq. That is the reason we've tied our troops' hands - because we are not justified in invading either of those countries.

Putting our troops in harm's way without allowing them to do what they're trained to do is like putting targets on their backs. We are not any safer now than we were and no matter when we leave Afghanistan, they will come after us.

Actually the terrorists came from Afghanistan; that's where their main operations were located. Iraq wasn't very involved; the Iraqi government helped train the terrorists, but who can blame them after we interfered with the Persian Gulf War. Now most are located in Saudi Arabia but Afghanistan is still extremely hostile and dangerous. Eventually we can probably demoralize and defeat their leaders and the attacks will cease. We need to defeat their leadership to end the aggression. It takes organization to commit terrorism.
