In the US you are supposed to have the right to a fair trial. But if you don't have the money to afford an attorney you are usually assigned an overworked and underpaid public defender vs the rich who have the resources to have the best legal representation. Does this seem fair ?

NO! Unequivocally! As with most everything in our country--all those fanciful ideologies aside--it is controlled by money, either how much you have OR how much you don't.

The problem lies in finding a BETTER overall system. MOST reasonable systems of justice have the adversarial component and this creates an immediate discrepancy ("unfairness" if you prefer).

Since "justice"--of either criminal OR civil actions--is mostly conjecture anyway (It's "fair" that TAXPAYERS are forced to provide men such as Bernie Madoff and Jeffrey Skilling with room, board, and medical treatment?), the adversarial method was the one arrived at most likely to punish those who commit offenses and discourage other FROM such acts. That it DELIVERS justice--when it DOES--is mostly a by-product.

Still, I don't really see anything that works AS WELL, let alone better.

The adversarial system in general is not fair. It sort of tries to be, but it's far from perfect.

The drama that takes place in American courtrooms has nothing to do with with justice, fairness, or truth. It's merely a contest to determine who bought the better lawyer.....

The amount of justice an individual receives in the United States is directly related to race, social class and wealth.

Why race? Because juries are full of racists? Or the judges are racist?

It might be helpful if you did some research into the U.S. justice system particularly related to race.

Justice is not fair. Life is not fair, if it were everyone would have the money for the same representation. That only happens in moronic communist utopias. You make your own fairness with hard work and ambition. Those that do that, have a larger portion of fairness.

I'm not sure you understand the concept of "fair". The only accurate thing you said was that life is not fair.

I don't share the liberal definition of "fair". Fair to them is taking from those who work and giving to those who won't.

In that case, I have no doubt you supported the tax policies of George W. Bush and Ronald Reagan. The tax policies of both resulted in a massive redistribution of wealth.

In other words, you can't refute the fact I posted. Both Reagan and Bush redistributed wealth from the bottom, who had little to begin with, to the wealthy.

I doubt you're aware of the fact that wages for America's working class has remained stagnant for three decades.

Your lack of knowledge related to this issue is most likely due to the fact you've been exposed to the numerous non-factual myths created about Reagan by the right wing propagandists who have spent decades polishing Reagan's rough edges.

Yes, and the current Republican initiative to give the richest 1% of Americans 700 billion dollars in unfunded deficit increasing tax cuts while refusing to extend unemployment benefits shows you what they are all about.

Right wing United States citizens are dolts. They've accepted the oft-repeated lie, began by Ronald Reagan, that the wealthiest Americans and those Americans who struggle day to day for economic security have common interests.

Prisons are full of non violent criminals that should not be there. Drug users, drinkers & deadbeat dads need to be out working & paying off their offenses or rehabed.

The rich man goes to rehab. The poor man goes to jail.

A recent investigation conducted by the Raleigh North Carolina News and Observer Newspaper revealed that the State of North Carolina routinely--as a matter of official written policy--with held exculpatory evidence from criminally accused individuals for decades. And in many cases knowingly imprisoned innocent people for many years.
Its corrupt Attorney General Roy Cooper then argued for their continued incarceration although he knew they were innocent.
Agents of the state routinely were TRAINED to commit perjury at trials to aid the state in obtaining convictions.
No arrests or prosecutions of these acts is even being considered.
In fact, the former head of the State Bureau of Investigation Robin Pendergraft was PROMOTED after these revelations came to light.

But there are many other reasons besides that one. Have you ever been called for jury duty? Every time I get called I'm amazed at the excuses people use to get out of jury duty. Is there really any such thing as a jury of our peers?
