Is the TSA right to allow pocket knives back on planes?

For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, federal airport screeners will allow passengers to carry onto a plane small knives, as well as golf clubs, hockey sticks and pool cues.

The policy change, which will take effect April 25, was immediately criticized by flight attendants, who say the move will create an unnecessary risk and further crowd the already limited space in the overhead bins.

"While we agree that a passenger wielding a small knife or swinging a golf club or hockey stick poses less of a threat to the pilot locked in the cockpit, these are real threats to passengers and flight attendants in the passenger cabin," said Stacy K. Martin, president of Southwest Airlines’ flight attendants union, TWU Local 556.

Why are we getting more stupid every day instead of smarter??? 1) The people in Washington that we put our lives in their hands don't care what happens. They are only there for their LARGE pay checks. 2) This is not America anymore and hasn't been for years. The people that are here but do not belong here have turned America into the country that they left because they didn't like their country. And good old Washington has let them. I was born and raised in California and for a lot of years now it has been called Mexifornia. I am ashamed to say I am an American, I should have been born when my Grandparents were born, then I wouldn't have to watch America deteriorat!!!!!

Before the government convinced passengers to not resist those that hijacked a plane, thus enabling a small numbet of terrorist armed with box cutters to take over planes and kill thousands of citizens, I always carried my pocket knife when I flew, as did many men, and we never had any problems with attacking the flight atttendants or other passengers, so I fail to see why it is going to happen now.

There is nothing wrong with a Swiss knife. But I do agree larger objects like golf clubs, hockey stick etc. will take up room and be an inconvience.

The next question needs to be about people with Concealed Carry (CCW in Utah) permits. How would 9-11 have gone down if some of the passengers had been carrying? What if the FAA/DOT hadn't previously disarmed the crew? Gun Free means victim disarmament and the airliner is one of those areas.

The whole idea of forbidding so much as a nail file seems stupid, a pocketknife is something like a towel, no frood hoopy enough to fly the pan-galactic highways would be caught dead without a pocketknife, or at least a nail file unless there were simply no option save acquiescence and surrender

I recall in years past I was on a commercial flight and several people boarded with rifles, some of which were in soft cases and some were carried over the shoulder. Who knows how many hidden hand guns there were among the passengers. No one seemed to be bothered by all that. Now folks get all up tight if one has a fingernail clipper in one's pocket. Now we applaud killing zones which are called gun free zones.

It only took box cutters to bring down the 9-11 planes! Now we're not only allowing knives but bats and golf clubs? The cockpit may be harder to get into; who's going to stop the use of these items on the flight crew and passengers?

Seriously, what are you going to do with a knife on a 2~8 hour flight? If you are traveling with a knife check in the baggage and make sure its properly wrap or sheathed. Imagine a guy sitting right next to you playing with their knife or clipping their nails o.O its only 2~8 hour flight or 8~24 overseas. What are you? a little kid who can't live a minute with out your toys?

Go ahead and as soon as someone goes crazy and decides they are going to cut someone they will have a huge lawsuit on their hands. When are people going to get it that its not just the terrorist we have to worry about. There are crazy ass "regular" people who fly too.

well, then you leave yours in your purse, I will wear mind and be prepared along with the others willing to take on an idiot with a blade or whatever! just knowing that the passengers are armed, it would deter anyone that even with their gun or whatever from trying anything stupid, cause we would shot them and dump them out of the plane!

Only the terrorists win when we give up freedom for a little bit of security. Next thing we should jettison is the Patriot Act, followed by a revision to the VAWA. These laws have eroded our civil liberties, one of the prime reasons America is viewed by the rest of the world as great.

I'd give up freedom for security, What the point of being free when you are constantly watching over your shoulder. To me that being in fear all the time is not being free.

I think you are equating being free with being helpless. Free people are more capable of defending themselves than those who have been trained to depend on 'gubment' to keep them safe.

The "Patriot Act" is a little far fetched. I personally feel it and the TSA is an insult to Americans. However it did give a lot of double digit morons jobs. Republican backed Security Industry is also doing very well.

The TSA should be disbanded. They are useless and only harass passengers. The pilots and crew should be armed and cockpits locked.

I'm tired of all the restrictions.

There's a line to be drawn, and Sept. 11th sparked the escalation that line to be drawn TOO far.

Guns? Large knives? Power tools? Flammables? Yes, those I can see not allowed on a plane for obvious reasons.

But small blades, hockey sticks, golf clubs, among MANY other things that aren't allowed take it too far.

I'm glad to see that we're finally starting to step away from the times we caved in to the fear of terrorists.
