I agree and completely understand what you mean.
Before I joined SodaHead I considered myself conservative with liberal leanings, but the conservatives of Great Britain are nothing like their American cousins. It took the extreme bitterness and relentless hatred of the right-wingers on here to convince me that I could never and would never be anything like them and that I also more liberal than I realised.
The trouble is caused by contrarians on the right and the left who are more interested in opposing each other than actually putting their heads together in order to think of solutions. They let emotion trump reason and debate becomes pointless.

Ummm! Could be! I am a moderate with conservative leanings under usual circumstances. The big problem is that we are not living in "the usual circumstances". I find myself time after time going out on the liberal limb to defend Obama from the crazed "conservatives" who throw the most insane ideas and slanders at him. I would like to see what he has to say and wants to do but everything he trys to do gets drownd out by the Limbaughorians. I would almost kill to hear a rational and sane debate in Congress or on SH for that matter! It seems that very few people are moderates or are allowed to be. If a rational conservative speaks their mind then they get branded a liberal by the flaming freaks to the right of them or they are called neocons by the looney liberals. What ever happened to sanity and rationalization? We are being smothered by lies and extremely irrational rants that make finding or even getting a glimpse at the truth almost impossible. The neutral zone is more like a fox hole that we cannot get dug deep enough to shelter us from the machine gun rhetoric flying from either direction. When I make a middle of the road statement about a subject presented here on SH the first thing I find myself doing is defending myself from the barrage of spitting, slobbering right-wingers who are flinging all kinds of venomous(and meaningless) barbs at my head. Would it be so hard to calmly say what they believe to be true and ask for my rebuttal? If we are unable to return to a more civil tone in our country are we doomed to go out in a volumous rant like a mad bezerker? Just mention such subjects as Obama, Palin, Socialism, Liberal, Conservative, Republican, Democrat, and the like and you had better be behind a bullet proof shield or you will be drownd in a spray of vile diatribes that make no sense and serve no purpose. Why must it be so hard to converse in a civil and responsible manner? Just to demonstrate this problem I will utter this next sentence and then duck back into my foxhole! Why are conservatives so liberal with their vendictive agendas? Bye!
