the IRS was started during world war II under the name of Victory Tax and was only to be issued during a time of war and up to two years after and was suppose to be considered "voluntary". people didn't want to be considered unpatriotic so they allowed the government to tax their income for this so called Victory Tax during the war and up to two years after. but people soon forgot, because we have a short memory span, so they continued to tax and changed it to income tax. that's why, if you have the old TAX booklets back in the late 80's maybe early 90's...the first few pages use to state....you are among millions who VOLUNTARILY pay income taxes. that was quickly removed!

that's about it in a nut shell or at least how I heard about it in 1992.

then Lincoln said we needed to pay temporary taxes to pay for the civil war

It's very simple ... if everyone who still has a job would change their W2 to the 9 form, we could stop funding this tyrannical government immediately and there is nothing they could do to anyone! I resent like heck paying taxes on my Social Security disability (worked 25 yrs, now have multiple disabilities and HATE not being able to work) simply because my husband is still working. If you and your spouse combined gross (not net, but gross) $35k a year and one or both of you are collecting Social Security, you have to pay Federal Income Tax. Kind of like paying a tax on a tax.

I resent paying taxes with no input as to how it is spent. Although I still wouldn't be a happy camper having money extorted from me to support those who will not work and be taxed, I would at least feel a little better if there were boxes on the form to check where my will go and what percent goes there. If I don't want to support Medicaid, then I don't check the box. If I want to support Medicare which takes care of the senior citizens, then I would check the box. If I do not care about the mating habits of some underwater life and do not want to fund that research, I don't check the box. If I want our veterans hospitals and the military to have the income and healthcare that they deserve....I check the box. It would seem to be simple and the government has to build the budget based on what is going to come in, not what they want to spend. Soooo easy!

The IRS has a place but taxation should be fair like about 10-15% across the board regardless of income. Everybody should have to pay something, no free rides.

I'm sorry but this is true, in order to talk aboout a country, in order to take advantage of any of its services including taking advantage of the protection offered by law and order you have to pay your taxes, it is just the price you pay for living in a country.

The biggest scam in history is the Federal Government and the States with coming up with the 16th Amendment passed in 1913, thus causing the formulation of the IRS I believe sometime after the depression. The agency only administers the tax laws embedded in the IRS Code passed by Congress. It is required to do so under the laws set forth by Congress. It's caught between a rock and hard place. You want the IRS to go away, write your congressman. That's unlikely to happen, because the IRS does a lot more than just administer income taxes: Employment Taxes, Excise Taxes, Estates, Trusts, Tax Exempt Organizations, Foundations. Unless, you get rid of all the above, the IRS will continue to exist.
