Is the Death Penalty Necessary?

California is putting another controversial measure on its ballot this year -- and you can expect to hear a lot more about it as it progresses. Activists collected 500,000 signatures to repeal the death penalty, a measure which would take 723 inmates off of death row and replace their sentence with life in prison. The death penalty is already off the table in 16 other states, and will soon be repealed in Connecticut.

The measure is significant in California because the state holds an enormous percentage of the nation's death row inmates (nearly a quarter, according to Yahoo! News). However, the state has only executed 13 people since 1976, compared to 481 executions in Texas. Activists argue that, regardless of moral issues, the state is spending billions of dollars on a system that rarely goes through with executions. Do you think the death penalty is necessary?

I oppose the death penalty not because I feel that someone who acually committed a terrible crime deserves any mercy, but because there are cases in which I think people who were not actually guilty were put to death. Better that we should jail the scum for life than inadvertently put to death one innocent person. However, I don't believe that prisons should be as cushy as they currently are. Inmates should not be allowed to watch television or have porno magazines. They should have access to a library. They should also have to work, and they should be carefully watched at all times. I may disagree with Joe Arpaio on profiling, but I fully agree with him that inmates should not be coddled. If you do the crime, the time served should not be easy.

I think those being "tortured" are the families of the victims. To know that the murderer gets to live, while they will never see their loved one again, is torture for the husband, wife, child, etc. of the victim. THAT part IS "emotional", and should be. For me, I'm not promoting the death penalty out of an emotional response, but out of justice. Justice is NOT emotional.

Are you living in the past? Obviously, there is more than one side to a story, anyway. People need to leave the past in the past and just learn from it. At least you know who your ancestors were. Most white people don't know much past a few generations back, nor do many of us care. I'm not a product of my past or of my ancestors.

If the "born again preacher" murdered someone, he should have been put to death. He still would have gone to heaven, so he probably would have been better off. Maybe that's why God chose not to remove him at that time.

Your last paragraph makes little sense. God controls our deaths, not anyone else. When our number is up, it's up, whether as a result of our own self-induced actions, or from someone else.

It's wasting money and resources to make sure these people don't off themselves before their time. I also don't think it's fair that they get to sit around doing nothing and practically living in a hotel instead of doing something hard like mining or cleaning out port-a-potties.

Wonder how many of those 500,000 bleeding heart activists ever spent time frantically looking for their 6 yr old daughter, only to find out she got raped, sodomized, chopped up, and stuffed in a trash bag by some guy that will get "punished" by 3 hots and a cot for the rest of his life ??

Lets see death as a penalty. OK they say it deters crime. They say its cheaper than LWOP. They claim to be Christians. I dont see ANY of it. As for being Christian well the KJV Bible says Thou Shalt Not Kill. Interesting isnt it.

My point is one thing. YOU said "the ONLY reason I'm NOT on death row is because of the death penalty deterant(SIC)". I see that as YOU are a wanna be criminal that IF you wanted to you would commit a crime that is covered by the Death Penalty. What crime that is is to be seen. However I can see one crime by just looking at your profile. Your like to bush and Reagan is out to lunch. Reagan would have hated bush. How do I know this?? My Dad was an Assemblyman and my Mom was a Legal Secretary in the Capitol. Every Friday when I came home from school Ide wait for my Mom in that Same Capitol and saw Ronnie all the time in the office and out of it. He was a great man bush was an alcoholic cocaine user and a HORRIBLE President. Now go away wanna be.

NO not a chance. I suggest LWOP and let the inmates handle it. That way the killing of these people arent on the shoulders of the State.

You think that allowing the inmates of a prison to "handle" certain criminals is a bit extreme while you advocate the State's killing of the same person instead?

    Ugh.

It should be done according to law. However, we could make it a pay-per-view event and raise tons of money for the poor.

    Wow.
Though you might be correct in thinking that such pay-per-view programs might indeed make "tons of money," isn't it just a little sick, not to mention amoral? Is that really the direction in which you'd like to see our nation go?
I mean, that's quite draconian, wouldn't you say? The public square of yesteryear didn't prevent crime then & it isn't going to do so now. Threat of the death penalty clearly doesn't stop everyone from committing heinous crimes. Broadcasting the punishment might only serve to make things worse. The way many people think today, it might just make them want to "be a star" & have their very own ten minutes of fame, so to speak.

Regardless, in my opinion, if we're going to keep touting the mantra that we're from "the greatest country in the world," we need to do things that support it, not take away from it. I find such an idea disgusting, of incredibly low moral fiber & simply tasteless.

Look the way I see it if you let the inmates deal with it you dont have to worry about all of the appeals and the REAL prison violence gets dealt with. End of story.

I'm all for that in the cases of rapes, pedophilia & even certain murders.
However, I'm a little bit surprised that someone who is against capital punishment would support it.
However, do keep in mind that the death row inmates are usually kept separate from the general population. Some of the extreme case defendants are as well.

I quite agree. Abortion IS murder. The Penalty of Death IS murder. We as a culture and society sanction these things because we are too lazy and apathetic to actualise real solutions.

You better make sure you're absolutely right BEFORE you "murder" a woman for having an abortion, because "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, saith the Lord." You have no proof that the fetus is a human being with a soul, which is what is required for there to be a "murder".
  • JAA Torchma... 2012/05/09 01:54:15
    JAA
Abortion is NOT "murder". Killing, yes, murder, no. God says, "Thou shalt not MURDER." A fetus is not yet a human being (does not possess a soul), so abortion is not taking the life of a human being, which is what God was talking about in the Ten Commandments.

Before you begin calling me names as all "good" Christians react to opposing opinions/beliefs, I am pro-choice BUT anti-abortion. I'm also against killing pregnant dogs, cats, etc., or their offspring.

The logic that the Left-wing Progressives to equate killing of the unborn to a murdering Adult in the right to life debate always escapes me. What is the same or how do you compare an unborn child who had no choice of from being ripped, chopped, or burned out of the womb and an adult who "Knowingly Murders" they know the difference from right and wrong, they may rape and kill, they may rob and kill, or they may kill another human for hate, can these be on the same level? Please explain how the two are the same between killing the unborn innocent child and killing a knowing adult who murdered?
You the left-wingers just want the doors to all the prisons opened, are you willing to take a large portion of the national debt to build bigger and more secure prsions to hold these murders so someone's else's family will not have to suffer at the hands of some animal who has no regard for human life...... what do you do with those who may love to kill, rape and destroy other peoples lives.

I think when one concentrates on one-upmanship, & labeling others' comments with debate tactic terminology, he has a major arrogance problem. People on here on generally not formal "debaters", & are not purposely trying some form of tactical approach to normal conversations. You might try to remember this & just go with the flow.
