Why not? It brings in tourists and adds another cultural element to the whole region. What's wrong with that?

Same here, but the reality is that they've been working on it for 60 years and aren't close to finished. But it's going to be beautiful, I'm sure

It's an 'honor' that only a white man could consider. To defile the land in such a way, and to do it to 'honor' one who they killed as an enemy would be funny if it weren't so tragic.

It is beautiful and since it is not taxpayer funded, I was only too happy to give toward the monument. It is my understanding that the Indians asked that it be carved because there is no such thing for the Indians. So, why not?

Crazy Horse refused to be photographed. Carving a giant monument in his image into the side of a mountain just seems like the ultimate middle finger, if you ask me.

Neither good nor bad. This monument is a private enterprise, and was supported by Indian tribes to honor Chief Crazy Horse. The family of Mr. Ziolkowski has managed to keep it private since his death.
I think anyone who has an interest in American history should go see this terrific work, and make a donation to help it continue. I personally have been there twice.

That is probably the primary motivation today, but it wasn't when Ziolkowski started it.
BTW, I believe that Mr. Ziolkowski worked on Mount Rushmore as a young man - can anyone on here confirm that?

I think it is good, because there is a story of history about who Crazy Horse was and what he stood for. I think Crazy Horse was a great leader to his people. The truth must be told.

It is a very good idea but the execution of it is the truly hard part. It is all privately funded and that is hard to come by. The final result I think would be as big a deal as Mount Rushmore but it will take a very long time to complete.

Thing about Mount Rushmore is, I mean dont get me wrong ive never been there so shoot me down if im wrong but it looks like such a mess at the bottom with all the rubble there, is that still at the bottom of it?

I've been there and seen the progress. It will be slow and I doubt it will be finished in my lifetime, but it's a grand project that's for sure.

It was - I was really struck with awe by the size of the thing. First, the work to date is of a pretty grand scale. Second, you start to imagine the whole thing being done and just say Wow!

There was a great show on the Discovery Channel about the artist who started it, his daughter who is continuing with the project, and the fact that she will also die before it is finished. I would love to see it.

I don't see how or why it should matter to the general public. It's a project of the Lakota Indian tribe and isn't using any federal funds. If it instills pride and preserves a piece of their history while providing some income for the area, more power to them.

How about Mount Rushmore just down the road a piece....good or bad idea?

Good points raised there, Mount Rushmore is very impressive, perhaps when it is finished in years to come will we see it as a wonder of the world like Mount Rushmore? I suppose at the moment it looks like a half finished job which is part of the problem. But is destroying mountains the best tribute? I mean its a very large piece and will significantly alter the landscape of that area.
