Wasn't there a time, not that long ago, when student protests were, you know, about something? In New York City's legendary Stuyvesant High School, kids are bucking the administration en masse and taking on another critical issue: dress codes. They fought back hard recently at new regulations in a campaign they called "Slutty Wednesday," during which they wore risque outfits to school and passed around flyers that said "Redress the Dress Code." Edgy!

slutty wednesday

Some of the draconian rules the brave students are protesting require, according to The New York Times that any sayings and illustrations on clothing should be in “good taste.” Another calls for shorts, dresses and skirts to extend at least beyond the fingertips when arms are extended straight down. A third bans the exposing of “shoulders, undergarments, midriffs and lower backs.”

“We work our asses off here and school is about learning. Clothing is not important,” ninth grader Lucy Greider told The New York Post. Some of the boys protested the new rules as well, claiming offense that the administration assumed they were unable to control themselves in the presence of girls in short skirts, and definitely not because they want to see girls in short skirts. So what do you think about "Slutty Wednesday?"

Its all about degradation of values and the dumbing down of the people... its the "in" thing now... wonderful way to conquer a country from within.

Every time we go somewhere my husband lines all the kids up and inspects them, t-shirt too tight, dress to short, blouse not long enough or it starts too low. The kiddos get mad especially the girls, he told them that he was once a hormone filled teenage boy so he knows how they think.

An adolescent isn't a little girl. And while it's true that there are people who rush the youth to adulthood, it doesn't mean they need to avoid all sexual attraction. This has nothing to do with that...it's just shoulders, stomach, and legs for crying out loud!

School should teach what is appropriate dress for business attire. If they dress for sucess when they are young, it would not be a problem getting a job in the future. They can dress slutty after school on their own time.

They shouldn't even have to worry about that at this age. Not everyone works in some boring office. This isn't even "slutty" in the first place.

I think you have to dress acording to the place u are going. If you are going to school something comfortable, maybe jeans, not too sporty, just casual... if u are going to a party use whatever u think it´s ok but don´t look slutty if u are not a slut... respect yourself... you want to get attentions there are other ways...well that´s the way I think

Or maybe you can just screw society in some ways. It has nothing to do with respect, "slutty" is what people say when they don't like something.

Their job is school and should be treated as such. Unless their career goal is to be a pole dancer, stripper or hooker that type of dress is inappropriate. So for 12 years these children think they can act like children and then all of a sudden start acting like adults when they turn 18? Not going to happen. Besides, in the school districts I've lived in, I know of two instances of extreme inappropriate sexual behavior. One was a 15 yo girl giving oral sex to a fellow student on a bus and the other was a 13 year old attempting anal sex with a 13 yo girl in the bushes along side the school, and that is just what I know happened. I'm not even mentioning what I've heard.

Why would we encourage greater sexualization of our children when they are already over-sexualized?

bushes school mentioning ive heard encourage greater sexualization children over-sexualized

They're probably faking having a problem with dress codes so it'll take less time to get their clothes off in the bathroom. Less clothes, more time. As a student your supposed to represent your school why would you want to make it seem like a school for prostitutes who are bad at their job.

The idea that the students are protesting something they feel is unjust is good. We have more than enough sheeple in the US. Not so sure about calling this "Slutty Wednesday" though. The "slutty" wasn't really appropriate. However from the video and few pictures I could find there wasn't a single student whose attire could be considered remotely slutty.

I am a teacher and I will tell you that much of the dress code is harsher than when I was a kid. Trust me. If I listed everything they are not able to wear you would see my point. I am actually very conservative and hate the whole pants two sizes too large stupidity but some of the rules are just stupid....No open toe shoes for girls...Really? My Mom is in her 70s and wears open toe shoes to work.

Well yours does sound excessive, I can understand that, but from what they've said are their restrictions, well it sounds pretty tame. Hell my old high school had the same rules.

Actually I am very conservative and am against everything you just wrote. I hate Gov handouts and think education is the key to success. All I am saying is that every teenager rebels in dress. We have MUCH bigger problems today with drug abuse, gang violence and a pleathora of other things...

Every generation rebels in dress and we can fight that fight all day long or accept that and move on to the bigger picture. Now, of course I belive there should be some form of dress code but most schools are really crazy when it comes to it. We will hand out contraceptives to kids but if a guy wears his baseball cap to school we loose our minds. I like little kids in ball caps it reminds me of the simple days back in the 50s.

1950s My Dad gets in trouble for wearing a plain white tee shirt tucked into his gant slacks because it looks like Elvis Presly and hence he is obviously a hood.

1960s we turn our sites of long sideburns.

1970s Bell bottoms are oulawed in schools.

1980s We get in trouble for wearing our jeans too tight. Flash dance shirts...multi colored skirts...

1990s No holes in the jeans or we send you home.

2000s Pants are too big..(I agree by the way.)

My point is they are kids...You are right...you can not do or dress that way in the real world but school is far from that...I...

My point is they are kids...You are right...you can not do or dress that way in the real world but school is far from that...In some ways nowadays we give kids ridiculas freedom and expect them to act like adults.

And in some ways we give them zero freedom to be little kids.

If the kids in the pics above are real and I have no idea if that is true...they look like silly high school kids not like whores...and you know what perhaps kids are growing up a bit too fast today so silly is ok. They have a lifetime to conquer the world.

Now as for your idiot comment...I wil tell you that one I am myself in education and hence feel that I am a bit of an expert on teenagers. I am very conservative and in fact a member of the GOP and a local committemen...so as far as handouts...I scoff at thee. I hate gov handouts and anything free from the gov.

I am 42 years old...43 on the 27th and guessing that since your name ends in 77 you are no moe than 35 so when you are a bit older and have a bit more real life experience I may take your oppinion of my intelligence seriously.

If you want to debate an adult discuss the point in question...In this case dress code. Don't jump to conclusions based on the answer a person gives to a single question.
