Wasn't there a time, not that long ago, when student protests were, you know,
about something? In New York City's legendary Stuyvesant High School, kids are bucking the administration en masse and taking on another critical issue: dress codes. They fought back hard recently at new regulations in a campaign they called "Slutty Wednesday," during which they wore risque outfits to school and passed around flyers that said "Redress the Dress Code." Edgy!
Some of the draconian rules the brave students are protesting require, according to
The New York Times that any sayings and illustrations on clothing should be in “good taste.” Another calls for shorts, dresses and skirts to extend at least beyond the fingertips when arms are extended straight down. A third bans the exposing of “shoulders, undergarments, midriffs and lower backs.”
“We work our asses off here and school is about learning. Clothing is not important,” ninth grader Lucy Greider told The New York Post. Some of the boys protested the new rules as well, claiming offense that the administration assumed they were unable to control themselves in the presence of girls in short skirts, and definitely not because they want to see girls in short skirts. So what do you think about "Slutty Wednesday?"
[sarcasm]
More than 20% of all public high-school enrollees either drop out or graduate in a state of functional illiteracy.
Though, I'd hardly call those rules unfair. The shoulder one is a bit odd, but honestly I don't see why the rest are such an issue.
Sounds like more of that entitlement that's going around that age group.
It's a way to get their point across, that's for sure.
Though I have to say that - judging by the pic - the outfits that they're wearing, aren't really slutty.
A little tacky - yes; bordering on trashy - yeah, sure, maybe; but slutty? Not quite.
However I think they should be wearing formal school uniform at all times especially in the ninth grade which I believe is 14. They should be wearing a school blazer with school emblem or badge, a skirt which can be above knee level, sensible but stylish court shoes and stockings with a hat of straw or felt or the like.
That would give the school a smart uniform look and not as though the girls were attending a pop concert.
You sir, obviously have a grave misunderstanding of "America" and pretty much its entire reason for existence. At the very least, your comprehension of the Constitution is...flawed.
Seeing as you have shown a complete ignorance on the basic principles of American society and government, I would like to kindly ask that you keep your ignorance out if the voting booth.
see, there...i just proved my point in 7 words.
Additionally I suggest you go back to school and take a few classes....preferably in regards to history and social sciences. Eventually you will learn to understand. when I was young I thought the same as you....but as a mature adult with a lot more wisdom I learned that there is always a reason for control.
Lastly the only reason i bet you are happy about this movement is because you are some pedophile getting excited about a bunch of young girls dressing as prostitutes.
Public schools should give the greatest leniency possible on dress codes because people should be allowed to wear what they want.
This is the issue with arbitrary rule.
Who will be the final arbiter of what is or isn't acceptable?
It's better to have a written code of conduct.
