Well it's July 4th and everyone knows what that means: hot dogs, hamburgers, and cold beer or at least that's what it's come to mean. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's a problem with celebrating our freedom by enjoying the day, but is it alright to be spending our days like this when we are destroying our freedom and harming this country with our oppressive foreign campaigns? Aren't there so many other options when it comes to alternative uses for such a huge military budget?

Actually, neither. Blanket statements have the problem of missing alternatives.

We could remove the oldest half of our nuclear arsenal, still have enough nuclear weapons to kill every living thing on the planet, and save enough in maintenance costs to pay off the national debt in 15 years or less. We could quit policing the world and use our military only for it's actual purpose (national defense) and save billions a year. It isn't unpatriotic to stop doing dumb things, but it is unpatriotic and disrespectful to cut pay and benefits (and needed equipment) to our military forces to save money to keep doing dumb things.

Yep we are throwing our money into foreign wars and foreign aid and to what means? Supporting the wealthy who are outsourcing our jobs! What a waste of money

The foreign campaigns are what are unpatriotic. If the troops are "endangered" (which is total BS), they should revolt against the brass, not whine about the american people upholding their rights to peace and the use of their own property.

Troops can not revolt against their commanding officers; that would be a serious offense. It's up to us to vote for people who will bring the troops home. That's why in the post I wrote---if you read it--I mentioned that we need to end these foreign campaigns.

Sometimes, the more you slash the more patriotic you are. A patriot does what's in the best interest of his/her country and countrymen. Sometimes that means de-funding nonsense wars, police actions, etc.

It depends on the campaigns. We are in places we have no business being. As an example we still have large bases in Europe. WW2 ended in 45 and the Cold war ended in the since December of 91 when the Soviet Union dissolved.

America is supposed to be about freedom, not going around forcing others to be like us. We should be setting an EXAMPLE that others will gladly follow.

Shooting people from other lands shouldn't even be on the Nation's top 1000 list.

Are there any campaigns against enlistment? Frankly I'm offended every time I see taxes spent advertising government programs including the military. It's bewildering that there isn't more opposition to such blatant propaganda. I still remember the picture of the ecstatic man on the back of the 1040 form book and thinking "I can't believe they paid a guy to look so happy to surrender his income when he'd go to prison for failing to do so". Who are they fooling?

It's unpatriotic to spend money unnecessarily and Gates' plan to downsize regular forces while increasing special operations makes enormous sense.

We need a strong defense PERIOD. Wasting money on unneeded wars is foolish, but we still need to be strong enough to defend ourselves.

If we stopped throwing money at bogus "green" schemes that don't work, send all illegals home (sorry if the "I" word offends anyone), and stop paying people to sit in their asses and make babies to collect welfare, we would be in far better economic circumstances.

There is a LOT of waste in our military...A LOT. We need a strong military, especially now with our enemies smelling "blood in the water" with pansy-assed Obama at the helm. But I am totally convinced those funds are already in-place and fine tuning our military at the administrative level could save BILLIONS, keep our military personnel well equipped, fed and technologically superior.

Our enemies "smelling blood in the water", with all due respect to your opinion most of the blood in the water has been that of our enemies. Rightly so.

Oh yeah, the same Obama who expanded the use of drones and escalated Afghanistan and increased the military budget and keeps a "kill list." Yeah, I'm sure foreign countries look at that guy and go "haha he's so soft!" Sometimes I wish Obama was more like the caricature that the Republicans and neo-cons think he is. Then again Obama is another chicken hawk so I agree he is a pansy, just a different kind of one.

Well in my post I discuss leaving the DOD with a budget of about $250B; it would probably actually be more based on the Obama spending numbers since I started with a figure of $700B, shaved off $200B to send to paying off our debts, and then cut the remainder in half leaving $250B for domestic spending and $250B for military spending. I think the current figures are now roughly $1T for military spending so that would be $800B after the $200B cut and $400B for domestic projects and $400B for military.

Oh we should cut from the lazy people too of course, but are we really any safer than we were before all of these foreign campaigns? I think more people want Americans dead now than they did before the wars started. Believe me, I am not a pacifist and I am not an isolationist, but we need to focus on our crumbling domestic infrastructure and we need to pick our fights carefully; we have done neither.
